The UB women, after a strong second-place showing after the first day buoyed by top marks in the weight throw and distance races, fell to eighth with a total of 43.50 points, but just nine of those points were accumulated on the second day. Akron won the overall team title with 97 points to edge second-place Eastern Michigan (95.50). The remainder of the women's field included Kent State (88.50), Ball State (81.50), Central Michigan (79), Western Michigan (57), Miami (OH) (49), UB (43.50), Northern Illinois (28), Bowling Green (19), Toledo (16), Ohio University (7) and Marshall (2).
Two Bulls scored two third place finishes on Saturday while the UB men also added a fourth-place finish. Senior distance specialist Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) placed third in the 3,000-meter run in 9:47.55. Ball State's Jill Scully, who beat Koeppel in last night's 5,000-meter race, took the 3,000-meter distance in a MAC Championship record 9:38.04. Multi-event performer Todd Joki (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) also scored a third-place finish in the men's heptathlon. Joki tallied 4,752 points over the two-day, seven-event competition. In Saturday's three events, he posted a top mark of 8.28 in the 60-meter hurdles, second in the event only to overall champion Jacob Freiss of Central Michigan.
UB's women's 4x400-meter relay squad posted a sixth-place finish in its race. The foursome of Celestine Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons), Patrice Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons), Stacy Downer (Philadelphia, PA/Dobbins Tech) and Vashone Wallace (Lackawanna, NY/Lackawanna) finished in 3:49.25, a season-best time, bettering the ECAC qualifying time by more than four seconds. The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Brian Heim (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), Ryan Brennan (Rochester, NY/Aquinas), Chris McClure (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg) and Joki also finished sixth in 3:25.89.
