Women Place Eighth, Men Sixth As MAC Track Championships Conclude

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI - The Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships wrapped up Saturday at Central Michigan University's Jack Skoog Indoor Track with the UB women finishing eighth in a field of 13 while the UB men placed sixth among six schools.

The UB women, after a strong second-place showing after the first day buoyed by top marks in the weight throw and distance races, fell to eighth with a total of 43.50 points, but just nine of those points were accumulated on the second day. Akron won the overall team title with 97 points to edge second-place Eastern Michigan (95.50). The remainder of the women's field included Kent State (88.50), Ball State (81.50), Central Michigan (79), Western Michigan (57), Miami (OH) (49), UB (43.50), Northern Illinois (28), Bowling Green (19), Toledo (16), Ohio University (7) and Marshall (2).

In a limited men's field, the UB men scored 24 points, just a half-point shy of fifth-place Ohio University (24.50). Host Central Michigan easily claimed the men's title with 214 points with Kent State (177.50), Eastern Michigan (111), Akron (105), Ohio University and UB following.

Two Bulls scored two third place finishes on Saturday while the UB men also added a fourth-place finish.

Senior distance specialist Jenny Koeppel (Amherst, NY/Amherst) placed third in the 3,000-meter run in 9:47.55. Ball State's Jill Scully, who beat Koeppel in last night's 5,000-meter race, took the 3,000-meter distance in a MAC Championship record 9:38.04.

Multi-event performer Todd Joki (Saratoga Springs, NY/Schuylerville) also scored a third-place finish in the men's heptathlon. Joki tallied 4,752 points over the two-day, seven-event competition. In Saturday's three events, he posted a top mark of 8.28 in the 60-meter hurdles, second in the event only to overall champion Jacob Freiss of Central Michigan.

Senior Gary Asbach (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) scored a fourth-place finish in the men's triple jump. Asbach leaped for a season-best 46-1.25 (14.05m) in the competition. He also placed sixth in Friday's long jump. Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) turned in a sixth-place finish in the men's mile with a 4:14.98 clocking.

UB's women's 4x400-meter relay squad posted a sixth-place finish in its race. The foursome of Celestine Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons), Patrice Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons), Stacy Downer (Philadelphia, PA/Dobbins Tech) and Vashone Wallace (Lackawanna, NY/Lackawanna) finished in 3:49.25, a season-best time, bettering the ECAC qualifying time by more than four seconds. The men's 4x400-meter relay team of Brian Heim (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South), Ryan Brennan (Rochester, NY/Aquinas), Chris McClure (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg) and Joki also finished sixth in 3:25.89.

Several Bulls will now head to Boston for next weekend's ECAC/IC4A Championships. Competition is slated for Friday and Saturday at Northeastern University's Reggie Lewis Center.
