UB Men Eighth, Women 11th at MACs

Track and Field squads complete Mid-American Conference Championships

BOWLING GREEN, OH - At the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, completed Saturday evening, the University at Buffalo's men's squad finished eighth among 11 schools while the Bulls' women's team placed 11th in a 12-team field. UB's men posted 31 points as Eastern Michigan won the team title with 164 points. The women's team tallied 21 points while Central Michigan finished first with 122 total points.

Leading the Bulls' men was sprinter Joe Clark (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) taking second place in the 400-meters in 48.56. Clark had turned in a 48.38, the fastest among all entrants, in Friday's preliminary round. Clark has already provisionally qualified for next month's NCAA Championships with his 47.14 showing at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational.

Distance specialist Todd Ludden (Hornell, NY/Hornell) finished fifth in the 5000 meters in 14:51.83. Teammate Jerimie Slick (Greece, NY/Greece-Olympia) took ninth with a 15:12.29 clocking.

Shotputters Byron McKinney (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) and Joe Loiacono (Rochester, NY/Greece-Olympia) also earned points for the Bulls. McKinney took sixth with a toss of 53-10.25 (16.41m) just missing his school record mark of 53-10.50 set earlier this season. Loaicono was seventh at 53-3.75 (16.25m). Steve Esler (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) recorded 2,823 points in the seven-event heptathlon to place sixth.

In the women's championships, junior Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell) took second in the 800 meters in 2:12.55 while teammate Allison Laske (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) finished eighth in 2:21.10. Keck improved on last season's performance from the 2001 championships when she took fifth in 2:15.06.

Sophomore Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) placed fourth in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 57-1 (17.40m). Junior Melissa Burrows (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) finished fifth in the 5000 meters in a season-best 17:36.74. Bernadette Boswell (Yonkers, NY/Roosevelt) earned one point in the triple jump with a eighth-place leap of 38-4.25 (11.69m) while Biaunca McFarland (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) placed ninth at 38-2.75 (11.65m).

Final Women's Scores: Central Michigan 122, Eastern Michigan 101, Ball State 97, Kent State 88 Toledo 58.5, Akron 51.5, Miami 38, Bowling Green 31, Western Michigan 24, Ohio 22, UB 21, Northern Illinois 9.

Final Men's Scores: Eastern Michigan 164, Western Michigan 90, Central Michigan 80.5, Ball State 69.5, Akron 68.5, Toledo 65.5, Kent State 54, UB 31, Bowling Green 22, Marshall 13, Ohio 4.
