Halim, Fletcher Take MAC Honors

Bulls indoor tracksters sweep conference Athlete of the Week awards

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo track and field athletes Kamau Halim (Medina, NY/Medina) and Sarah Fletcher (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway-Crystal Beach) were selected as the Mid-American Conference's Male and Female Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league office announced.

Halim won the long jump competition at Saturday's Cornell Kane Invitational with a leap of 23-10, breaking the previous school record set by Thom Kaye in 1996 of 23-5.5. The leap is also the best in the Mid-American Conference this season. Halim also holds UB's triple jump record at 49-1.25 which also ranks him second in the league this season in that event. This the second time that Halim has earned MAC Athlete of the Week honors previously winning the award on Feb. 6.

Fletcher provisionally qualified for the upcoming NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., with her record setting toss of 58-10 in the 20-lb. weight throw at the Cornell Kane Invitational. Last season's Mid-American Conference champion in the weight throw, Fletcher stands first in the league's rankings for the event this season. This marks the second consecutive season that Fletcher has provisionally qualified for NCAA competition.

Both the men's and women's squads will participate in this weekend's MAC Championship meet at Central Michigan University.
