KENT, OH – The University at Buffalo men’s and women’s track and field teams concluded the regular season Saturday with the Kent State Tune Up Meet. While many of UB’s top athletes sat out the non-scoring meet, several other Bulls improved their marks heading into next week’s Mid-American Conference Championships.

UB’s women’s weight throwers were one of the highlights for the Bulls. Senior Sarah Vance (Lockport, NY/Lockport) finished second in the shot put at 47-10.50 (14.59m), just two inches off her season-best mark. Kent State’s Breann Smith won the event at 50-1.75 (15.28m) while UB’s Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) was third at 47-4.25 (14.43m). Vance also improved on her ECAC qualifying distance in the weight throw with a toss of 56-7.25 (17.25m), bettering her previous best by almost two feet, finishing seventh overall. Thompson was third in the weight throw at 60-10 (18.54m).

Two other UB women finished in the top 10 in the shot put. Ekua Mends-Aidoo (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) placed ninth at 42-0.75 (12.82m) while Beverly Weyer (Castalia, OH/St. Mary’s Central Catholic) was 10th at 41-4.25 (12.60m).

Other top 10 finishes for the women included Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) taking fourth in the 1,000-meters in 3:00.33. Jessica Lister (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) and Carrie Hinners (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) tied for fifth in the pole vault at 10-10.25 (3.31m) while Susan Long (Clarence, NY/Clarence) tied for eighth at 10-4.25 (3.16m). Jessica Ball (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) tied for seventh in the high jump at 5-0.25 (1.53m). Dana Ventrone (Pittsburgh, PA/Chartiers Valley) finished seventh in the long jump at 16-10 (5.13m). On the track, Aleksandra Bykowska (Poznan, Poland/Third High School in Poznan) was 10th in the mile run at 5:14.68.

For the UB men, senior middle-distance runner Onile White (Bronx, NY/DeWitt Clinton) earned an IC4A qualifying mark in the 1,000-meters. White finished sixth in the race in 2:29.33, bettering his season best by eight seconds.

The Bulls also picked up a pair of fifth-place finishes in the men’s meet. Andy Leonard (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) placed fifth in the 5,000-meters in 15:20.59 while Michael Giordano (Springville, NY/Springville) was fifth in the shot put at 50-6.75 (15.41m). Paul Riley (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) finished 10th in the 800-meters in 1:55.91 while Chris McClure (Trumansburg, NY/Trumansburg) was 11th in the 300-meter run (37.25), a distance not typically run at most indoor meets.

With the regular season complete, the Bulls head into the postseason campaign. The MAC Championships are Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26 at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, MI. The ECAC/IC4A Championships are the following weekend in Boston at Northeastern University’s Reggie Lewis Center.
