Bulls Face Top Competition at PSU

The University at Buffalo men's and women's indoor track and field squads were in action Saturday at the United States Track Coaches Association (USTCA) Invitational at Penn State University.

UB's women placed ninth of 12 squads with 21 points. Big Ten member Indiana won the team competition with 102.33 points. The Bulls men finished 11th in the 11-team field with seven points. Penn State won the team competition with 134 points. The meet featured some of the top programs from around the country.

The UB women were led by Sarah Fletcher's (Ridgeway, Ontario/Ridgeway-Crystal Beach) fourth place finish in the 20-lb. weight throw with a mark of 55-8.5 (16.98m). High jumper Chrissie Matthews (Waterford, NJ/Edgewood) was fourth in her event at 5-6 (1.68m). Biaunca McFarland (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) also placed fourth in the triple jump at 38-11.75 (11.88m). Faith Thompson (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) was 12th in the event at 49-10.5 (15.20m). Melissa Burrows (Norwood, NY/Norwood-Norfolk) was sixth in the 5,000-meters in 17:58.75. Christina Keck (Erie, PA/McDowell) took eighth in the 800-meters in 2:11.97. Her time is the fastest in the Mid-American Conference this season and a personal best.

Mike Commisso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) set a new school record taking sixth place in the 800-meters with a time of 1:51.48. Teammate Ben Moskel (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) placed 11th in the race in 1:53.73. Commisso and Moskel's times are also IC4A qualifying marks. The foursome of Tom Stuart (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy), Pete Otovic (DeWitt, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt), Commisso and Tony David (Lima, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) also established a new school mark with their 10:12.75 clocking in the distance medley relay. Mark Curry (Brockport, NY/Brockport) was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 47-2.5 (14.39m).

Mitchell Takes Bronze

UB distance coach Vicki Mitchell did not accompany the team to Penn State for their weekend meet. Instead Mitchell took to the road, literally, racing to a third place finish at the Carolina 8K USA Women's Championship in Columbia, SC.

Mitchell completed the rectangular course at the Ft. Jackson military base in 26:53. Three time Olympian Colleen DeReuck, one of the world's best road runners, won the race in 26:16.

The Carolina 8K also opened the 2001 USA Running Circuit, a USA Track and Field road series. The 2001 USARC offers over $290,000 in prize money. Mitchell also earned 10 points in the runner's standings. All eight USARC women's races this season are USA Championships.
