UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – Both of the University at Buffalo’s indoor track and field teams turned in 10th-place finishes at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup hosted by Penn State University. The UB men scored 25 points in the 13-team meet while the UB women picked up 31 points among 15 squads. The host Nittany Lions won both team titles.

In the men’s meet, UB’s horizontal jumpers led the way as Roy Richards (Rochester, NY/Edison Tech) won the long jump with a leap of 24-1.75 (7.36m). Rayshon Higgins (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) finished third in the triple jump at 49-5.75 (15.08m). Higgins’ leap improved his season best and IC4A qualifying marks by more than 18 inches. Loic Sebuharara (Vestal, NY/Vestal) also posted a season best in the triple jump at 43-4.50 (13.22m).

Other men’s highlights included a third-place finish by Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) in the mile. McKenna, who broke his own school record on Penn State’s Horace Ashenfelter Track, two weeks ago, finished in 4:11.43. George Fetchko (Warren, OH/Howland) finished seventh in the shot put at 52-11.50 (16.14m) and Brian Heim (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) improved his IC4A qualifying mark with a 49.23 clocking in the 400-meters to place 11th overall. Heim also ran the opening leg of the 4x400-meter relay along with Paul Riley (Buffalo, NY/Canisius), Babaseyi Olaleye (Lagos, Nigeria/Lagos) and Bryan Weinstein (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North). The foursome finished in 3:19.24.

Jen Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) broke Christina Keck’s 2003 mile record with her second-place finish. Jezorski, who had established an ECAC qualifying mark on the track at the Penn State National Meet, cut six seconds off her time and eight-tenths of a second off the school record to finish in 4:50.20. Later, Jezorski was part of UB’s 4x400-meter relay squad which posted an ECAC qualifying time of 3:53.75 as she teamed with Stacy Downer (Philadelphia, PA/Dobbins/Randolph Tech), Desiree Rudloff (West Falls, NY/East Aurora) and Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence). The Bulls finished 10th in the relay.

Freshman Caitlin Godin (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) finished fourth in the high jump at 5-7 (1.70m). Tina Villa (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) placed fifth in the shot put at 44-11 (13.69m). Kohout earned an ECAC qualifying nod in the 800-meters in 2:11.79 to finish fifth and also paced the distance medley relay team to a fifth-place finish in 11:50.64. Kohout was followed in the relay by Rudloff, Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) and Jessica O’Neill (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles).

In the pole vault competition, UB’s Carrie Hinners (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) and Jessica Lister (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) both cleared 11-9.75 (3.60m). Hinners earned the sixth-place finish and was the highest finisher among the seven entrants who finished at the height based on fewest misses in the competition. The height was also a season best for Hinners and qualified the sophomore for the ECAC meet. Lister was credited with an 11th-place finish.

UB’s women’s 3,000-meter entrants also posted season-best times and earned a pair of top-10 finishes. Aleks Bykowska (Poznan, Poland/Third High School in Poznan) finished sixth in 10:09.41, cutting more than a minute and a half off her previous season-best time. O’Neill raced to a 10th-place finish in 10:20.79, bettering her previous best by nearly 25 seconds.

Both squads are at the Zips Open in Akron, OH on Friday, February 17.
