Bulls take home trio of first place finishes at Sykes-Sabock ChallengeUNIVERSITY PARK, PA - The University at Buffalo men’s and women’s indoor track and field team’s had a solid showing at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge hosted by Penn State, as the UB women finished seventh in a 13 team field with 36.50 points while the men finished tenth in an 11 team field with 31 points. Additionally, the women’s team edged out fellow MAC member Kent State as the Golden Flashes finished eleventh with 17.50 points.
Tiffany Maskulinski (Elma, NY/Iroquois), Caitlin Godin (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) and Ezekiel Porter (Rochester, NY/East) all concluded the meet with individual titles for the Bulls. Ryan Zillmann (Deer Park, NY/Half Hollow Hills West) and John Bauman (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) also set new school records in the 600-meter dash as Bauman broke Zillmann’s record moments after he initially set it. Maskulinski dominated the field on the women’s side, claiming first place in the pole vault with her NCAA provisional qualifying standard and indoor college best mark of 3.95m. Teammate Carrie Hinners (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) placed fourth in the same event with a jump of 3.50m. Godin was also an individual winner for the Bulls, winning the high jump with a leap of 1.71m. Lataya Dixon (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) also scored in the women’s high jump, as the freshman finished fourth with a jump of 1.66m.
Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) turned in a personal best in the mile run with a time of 4:56.19, good for eighth place, while Jessica Schultz (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) produced a lifetime best of 5:10.95 in the same event. Other strong performances on the women’s side were turned in by Tina Villa (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) who finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 14.51m, Jessica Cooper (Long Beach, CA/Long Beach Polytechnic) who placed eighth in the long jump with a distance of 5.43m and Nicole Soblosky (Colonie, NY/Colonie) who finished eighth in the 3000-meter run with a personal best time of 10:18.24. “As we had hoped, we scored several points in the field events areas, which is one of the strengths of the team this year,” said head coach Vicki Mitchell. “The middle distance and distance runners continue to see weekly improvements. One key factor was our ability to compete and win against Kent State.”
On the men’s side, Porter claimed first place in the 200-meter dash with a season’s best time of 21.58 while Bauman grabbed second place in the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:20.42. Zillmann finished the same event in sixth place with a time of 1:21.13.
Other strong performances were turned in by Dan Schitchel (Eden, NY/Eden), who finished fourth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.98, Jesse Mang (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) who scored a 12th place finish and a personal best in the 3000-meter run with a time of 8:37.0, Alex Stamatakis (Hania, Crete, Greece/First Technical & Vocational School of Crete), who placed 12th in the weight throw with a distance of 17.58m and George Fetchko (Warren, OH/Howland) who placed ninth in the shot put with a distance of 15.81m. The Bulls return to action next weekend, as the team is slated to compete in the New Balance Collegiate Meet in New York, NY.
