Plenty of Top Performances at Penn State National Meet
The University at Buffalo men's and women's track and field
teams completed action at the Penn State National Invitational with one victory,
two second-place finishes and three record-setting performances against some
of the East's top schools. There was no team scoring at the meet. The
field included some of the toughest competition that UB has seen this
season, including Tennessee, Georgetown, Miami (FL) and the host Nittany Lions.
Richards Wins Long Jump; Higgins Second in Triple Jump
Roy Richards | In the men's meet, Roy Richards (Rochester, NY/Edison
Tech) won the long jump with a leap of 24-1.75 (7.36m). Richards also placed 23rd in a
29-runner field in the 200-meters in 22.76, a season-best in the race. The
UB recordholder (24-5.50) in the event, his distance was an inch and a quarter
shy of his season-best effort of 24-3, set at Cornell the previous week.
Rayshon Higgins (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St.
Jude) placed second in the triple jump at 47-10.50 (14.59m). The leap improved Higgins' IC4A qualifying
mark by an inch and a half.
Relayers Set School Records
Jen Jezorski | Both of UB's distance medley relay teams established new school
records in their races. The women's distance medley relay team took second-place
in 11:38.35 and earned an ECAC qualifying time. The team of
Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore), Stacy Downer (Philadelphia,
PA/Dobbins/Randolph Tech), Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence)
and Jen Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira
Southside) broke the previous record, set at last
season's ECAC Championships by more than two seconds. Jezorski and Veith
also posted ECAC qualification times in the women's mile. Jezorski clocked
a 4:56.44 to finish fifth while Veith turned in a 5:00.46 showing to place ninth.
Dan McKenna | The men's distance medley foursome of
Chris McClure (Trumansburg, NY/Charles O. Dickerson), Rob McRae (Rexford, NY/Shenendehowa),
Paul Riley (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) and
Dan McKenna (Liverpool,
NY/Liverpool) finished fourth overall in 9:59.68, establishing an IC4A qualifying mark
and dropping the old mark, set last season by five seconds. McRae,
Brian Heim (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville
East), Riley and Bryan Weinstein
(Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) also improved their ECAC qualifying mark in
the 1,600-meter relay in 3:17.50, slicing more than a second off the previous best.
McKenna also set an individual school record with his
seventh-place finish in the mile. He finished in 4:09.30, lowering his 2004 record by
three seconds and earning a spot in the IC4A meet.
