Plenty of Top Performances at Penn State National Meet

The University at Buffalo men's and women's track and field teams completed action at the Penn State National Invitational with one victory, two second-place finishes and three record-setting performances against some of the East's top schools. There was no team scoring at the meet. The field included some of the toughest competition that UB has seen this season, including Tennessee, Georgetown, Miami (FL) and the host Nittany Lions.

Richards Wins Long Jump; Higgins Second in Triple Jump

In the men's meet, Roy Richards (Rochester, NY/Edison Tech) won the long jump with a leap of 24-1.75 (7.36m). Richards also placed 23rd in a 29-runner field in the 200-meters in 22.76, a season-best in the race. The UB recordholder (24-5.50) in the event, his distance was an inch and a quarter shy of his season-best effort of 24-3, set at Cornell the previous week. Rayshon Higgins (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) placed second in the triple jump at 47-10.50 (14.59m). The leap improved Higgins' IC4A qualifying mark by an inch and a half.

Relayers Set School Records

Both of UB's distance medley relay teams established new school records in their races. The women's distance medley relay team took second-place in 11:38.35 and earned an ECAC qualifying time. The team of Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore), Stacy Downer (Philadelphia, PA/Dobbins/Randolph Tech), Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) and Jen Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) broke the previous record, set at last season's ECAC Championships by more than two seconds. Jezorski and Veith also posted ECAC qualification times in the women's mile. Jezorski clocked a 4:56.44 to finish fifth while Veith turned in a 5:00.46 showing to place ninth.

The men's distance medley foursome of Chris McClure (Trumansburg, NY/Charles O. Dickerson), Rob McRae (Rexford, NY/Shenendehowa), Paul Riley (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) and Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) finished fourth overall in 9:59.68, establishing an IC4A qualifying mark and dropping the old mark, set last season by five seconds. McRae, Brian Heim (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East), Riley and Bryan Weinstein (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) also improved their ECAC qualifying mark in the 1,600-meter relay in 3:17.50, slicing more than a second off the previous best.

McKenna also set an individual school record with his seventh-place finish in the mile. He finished in 4:09.30, lowering his 2004 record by three seconds and earning a spot in the IC4A meet.

High Jump and Pole Vault Events Also a Success For Bulls

UB's vertical jumpers also had strong performances at the meet. In the women's high jump, freshman Caitlin Godin (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) tied for third with a height of 5-7 (1.70m). Freshman men's pole vaulter Ryan Gregory (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) tied for fifth at 14-9 (4.50m) in his first collegiate competition. In the women's pole vault, Jessica Lister (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) earned an ECAC qualifying mark with her leap of 12-3.50 (3.75m). Teammates Carrie Hinners (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) finished eighth at a season-best 11-3.75 (3.45m) and Alysha Rodriguez (Bayport, NY/Bayport Blue Point) was 17th at 10-4 (3.15m).
