McFarland Wins Second MAC Award

UB women's track and field athlete selected Female Scholar Athlete of the Week

BUFFALO, NY - It's become a clean sweep for University at Buffalo women's track and field athlete Biaunca McFarland (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) as she has been named as the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week, the league has announced. The award comes on the heels of her selection on Monday as the league's track and field Female Co-Athlete of the Week.

McFarland, attained an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the triple jump as she broke her own school record to win the event at the Cornell Five-Way on Saturday. She turned in a leap of 41-7 (12.67m), bettering her old mark of 41-3 (12.57m) set two weeks before. Additionally, McFarland also placed second in the 200-meter dash in 25.56, tied for second in the 60-meter dash in 7.89 and anchored the winning 4x400 relay team. The Bulls placed second at the meet behind host Cornell.

The senior holds a 3.109 grade point average and is a double-major in psychology and African-American studies at UB.

"After four years of hard work, I really want to thank my coaches and teammates for being so cooperative with my schedule and training," said McFarland.

The UB record-holder in both the indoor and outdoor triple jumps, McFarland earned All-MAC First Team honors at the 2002 outdoor championships. She won the title at 42-0.50 (12.81m) to set the school record in the event and earn a provisional qualification for the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Her leap was the 23rd-best in the country during the outdoor season, but she just missed making the NCAA field as only the top 21 jumpers were selected to the competition.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
