Bulls Conclude Competition at Penn State National Invite

Patrice Coney sets school record in pentathlon

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The University at Buffalo men's and women's indoor track and field teams commenced competition at the Penn State National Invitational held Friday and Saturday and came away with a record-setting performance at the end of day one. There is no team scoring in the meet that featured top collegiate programs from throughout the United States.

Senior Patrice Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons) scored a new school record in the Pentathlon, establishing herself as a NCAA provisional qualifier with her fourth place finish. Coney’s 3751 points came via a scorching performance in the 55-meter hurdles event in the pentathlon competition, squashing the school record in that event in 8.19. In the other events of the pentathlon, Coney also placed first in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:20.93, second in the shot put with a personal best 11.34m and third in the long jump with a leap of 5.40m.

Also in the women’s pentathlon, freshman Lataya Dixon (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) had a strong showing for the Bulls, placing seventh with 3531 points. Dixon inked a personal best in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.33 and won the high jump in 1.69m.

Senior thrower Tina Villa (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) advanced to the finals of the shot put, placing seventh overall with an indoor personal best of 14.77m while junior Fatimah Hill (Waterport, NY/Lyndonville) advanced to the finals of the long jump, placing seventh with a distance of 5.79m.

Also competing for the Bulls on the women’s side was junior Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) who placed an impressive fifth in the Invitational 3000-meter run with a time of 9:44.06, which is the second-fastest time in UB history.

UB’s pole vaulters had an excellent showing, as sophomore Tiffany Maskulinski (Elma, NY/Iroquois) placed fifth in the Invitational pole vault with a height of 3.66m while senior Carrie Hinners (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove) placed seventh in the same event with a height of 3.51m.

Junior Jessica Schultz (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) competed in the open 3000-meter run, placing third with a personal best of 10:14.35 while sophomore Christine Sprehe (Boston, NY/Orchard Park) ran a personal best in the 1000-meter run, posting a time of 3:02.65.

“This is the best competition that the women’s team has seen thus far. The qualifying standards are very strict and the fields are limited to 30 individuals per event,” said head coach Vicki Mitchell. “Of the women we took, several achieved personal best performances or season best marks and have moved into the top 10 on the MAC list.”

On the men’s side, sophomore Ezekiel Porter (Rochester, NY/East) advanced to the semifinal round of the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.91 and also was part of the men’s 4 x 400-meter relay team that had a season’s best performance in the event with a time of 3:17.92 as the team of Porter, sophomores John Bauman (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North), John Conners (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) and freshman Brandon Giles (Rochester, NY/Edison Tech) won their heat.

Additionally, senior Dan Giza (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) ran a personal best in the Invitational mile, running the second-fastest time in UB school history. Giza’s 4:11.30 placed him fourteenth in the competition.

Rounding out the men’s side of the competition, junior thrower Alex Stamatakis (Hania, Crete, Greece/First Technical & Vocational School of Crete) placed eighth in the weight throw with a distance of 17.52m.

The Bulls return to action next weekend, as the squad will head back to University Park, PA for the Sykes/Sabock Challenge.
