BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo women's track and field head coach Vicki Mitchell has announced the signing of two athletes to join the Bulls' program for the 2003-04 school year. Mitchell has signed jumper Tara Phouthavongsa (Brockport, NY/Brockport) and pole vaulter Jessica Lister (Rodman, NY/South Jefferson) to National Letters of Intent.

Phouthavongsa placed third in the 2002 New York State Championships in the triple jump and reached the finals of the 400-meter intermediate hurdles during her junior season at Brockport High School. Heading into her senior season, she has attained top marks of 5-7 in the high jump, 37-4 in the triple jump and 17-7 in the long jump as well as a top time of 1:05.64 in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. Phouthavongsa will most likely be developed into a multi-event athlete at UB competing in the indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon.

"Her individual marks in the jumping events and hurdle events indicate that she has a lot of potential for the multis," said Mitchell.

Lister's primary event has been the pole vault, where she has reached a top height of 10-9 in her high school career. She has also spent time on the track with top times of 1:03.6 in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, 1:39 in the 600-meters and 3:05 in the 1,000-meters. Lister also spent time with South Jefferson's cross country squad as a top scorer during the fall.

"Jessica has great speed and strength which will help her in becoming a great vaulter," said Mitchell. "Her versatility shows great athletic ability."

The University at Buffalo is a Division I program and competes in the Mid-American Conference in indoor and outdoor track and field.
