Bulls Have Strong Showing at Upstate Challenge

Women finish third; men finish second

ITHACA, NY - The University at Buffalo track and field team turned in a strong performance on Saturday, as both the men’s and the women’s squads had strong showings in a large field of competitors at the Upstate Challenge, hosted by Cornell University.

The UB women emerged with a third place finish while the men came in second on their side. The women’s team ended the competition with 112 points, while the men’s squad finished with 94 points. Both teams competed in a seven team field consisting of UB, Cornell, Syracuse, Binghamton, Colgate, Cortland and Ithaca College. Cornell won both the women’s and the men’s competitions finishing with 229 and 230 points, respectively.

The Bulls had four individual winners on the women’s side, led by Patrice Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons) who dominated the 60-meter hurdles winning the event in 8.84. In the high jump, Fatimah Hill (Waterport, NY/Lyndonville) and Caitlin Godin (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) finished one-two, as both cleared 1.65m while Tiffany Maskulinski (Elma, NY/Iroquois) won the pole vault, winning the event with a height of 3.75m. Additionally, Tina Villa (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) threw a season’s best in the shot put to win the competition with a distance of 14.38m.

Other outstanding performances were turned in by Octavia Johnston (Syracuse, NY/Fowler), who placed third in the 60-meter dash with a season best time of 7.86 and second in the long jump with a leap of 5.61m. Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) also had a solid showing, placing second in the 5000-meter run in 17:47.5.

On the men’s side, Buffalo had a handful of individuals place in events, led by Alex Stamatakis’ (Hania, Crete, Greece/First Technical & Vocational School of Crete) duo of second place finishes. Stamatakis placed second in the shot put with a toss of 15.97m and second in the weight throw, with a throw of 17.44m. Teammate George Fetchko (Warren, OH/Howland) finished third in the shot put with a throw of 15.78m while Matt Gac (Newark Valley, NY/Newark Valley) finished third in the weight throw, turning in a distance of 17.35m.

On the track, Ezekiel Porter (Rochester, NY/East) had another extremely strong performance with a second place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.03. Other strong times were turned in by John Bauman (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville North) who finished third in the 500-meter dash in 1:05.99 and Josh Durkin (Depew, NY/Lancaster) who finished second in the 1000-meter run in 2:37.18. Jamal Norward (Buffalo, NY/Hamburg) finished third in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.34 while Loic Sebuharara (Vestal, NY/Vestal) came in second in the triple jump with a season best distance of 14.55m.

Additionally, Dan Giza (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) had a good showing in the 5000-meter run, turning in a lifetime best time of 14:47.76, good for fourth place, while Buffalo placed three-four-five in the high jump, led by Peter Bligh’s (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) third place jump of 2.04m.

The Bulls return to action next weekend, as the team travels to compete in the Penn State National Invite in University Park, PA.
