The University at Buffalo kicked off the indoor track and field season at the Akron Quad Meet on Friday with second-place team finishes in both the men’s and women’s competitions, with several UB athletes scoring individual wins. The Bulls finished behind host Akron Zips on the scoreboard in both the men’s and women’s meets. Buffalo’s men scored 140 points to Akron’s 160. Pittsburgh finished third with 92 points while Youngstown State finished fourth with 79 points. Buffalo’s women posted 135.5 points, second to Akron’s 183.5. Pittsburgh tallied 96.5 points while Youngstown State ended with 82.5 points to round out the competition. Porter Earns Two Individual Victories For Men The UB men won seven events, with Ezekiel Porter (Rochester, NY/East) capturing two individual events. Porter won the 60-meter race in 6.89 and took first in the 200-meter dash in a time of 21.59. In addition, Porter anchored Buffalo’s winning 4x400-meter relay squad, which took first in 3:22.49.
Giza Crushes School Record Senior Dan Giza (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) crushed UB’s school record in the 3000-meter run, improving the by over five seconds. Giza’s time of 8:24.57 earned him a second-place finish in the event and made him an IC4A qualifier. Men’s Throwers Dominate In First Meet
The Bulls’ throwers placed one-two in both the shot put and the weight throw, as George Fetchko (Warren, OH/Howland) won the shot put with an IC4A qualifying distance of 16.34m while Alex Stamatakis (Hania, Crete, Greece/First Technical & Vocational School of Crete) placed second in the same event with a toss of 15.32m. In the weight throw, Matt Gac (Newark Valley, NY/Newark Valley) brought home first place with his IC4A qualifying distance of 17.44m while Stamatakis took second place with a mark of 16.47m. Coney, Dixon End One-Two In Hurdles
Patrice Coney (Lyons, NY/Lyons) and Lataya Dixon (Edison, NJ/J.P. Stevens) earned a handful of points for UB in the 60-meter hurdles, as the duo finished one-two, posting times of 8.88 and 9.06, respectively. Veith, Villa, Maskulinski and Godin Qualify for ECAC’s
Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) earned an ECAC Championships slot with her first place finish in the mile, as the junior clocked in at 4:59.16. Thrower Tina Villa’s (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) first place finish in the shot put qualified her for the ECAC championships as the senior recorded a toss of 14.12m. Caitin Godin (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) won the high jump and qualified for ECAC’s with a jump of 1.70m while Tiffany Maskulinski (Elma, NY/Iroquois) won the pole vault in her Buffalo debut.
