Indoor Track Teams Open Season at Kent State Black Squirrel Classic

UB men place third of six; women take fifth among seven

KENT, OH - The University at Buffalo men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened the season Saturday at the Black Squirrel Classic hosted by Kent State University. The UB men placed third among six teams with 104.50 points while the women finished fifth in a seven-team field with 48 points. Host Kent State won the men's meet over Maryland-Eastern Shore, 114-113, while Bucknell scored 113.75 points to win the women's meet by three points over Maryland-Eastern Shore.

The UB men posted three first-place finishes with all three athletes attaining IC4A qualifying marks. Rayshon Higgins (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) won the triple jump with a leap of 47-8 (14.53m). Dan McKenna (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) took the 1,000-meter run in 2:28.2 and Bryan Weinstein (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) won the 200-meter dash in 22.07. Weinstein also finished fourth in the 60-meters in 7.10.

Roy Richards (Rochester, NY/Edison Tech) also earned an IC4A qualifying mark with his second-place finish in the long jump at 23-11.50 (7.30m). Richards also placed second in the 60-meters in 7.02. Rob McRae (Rexford, NY/Shenendehowa) tied for second in the 400-meters in 49.39 to qualify for IC4A competition. Paul Riley (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) placed second to McKenna in the 1,000-meters in 2:31.2. The 4x400-meter relay team of Chris McClure (Trumansburg, NY/Charles O. Dickerson), Weinstein, Riley and Brian Heim (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) also earned an IC4A mark with their second-place finish of 3:18.60.

Two of UB's men's shot putters also earned IC4A qualifications on Saturday. George Fetchko (Warren, OH/Howland) was fourth at 54-9.50 (16.70m) while Mike Giordano (Springville, NY/Springville) was fifth at 53-1.50 (16.19m).

For the UB women, Jen Jezorski (Elmira, NY/Elmira Southside) broke the school record with her victory in the 1,000-meters. Jezorski turned in a 2:52.06 clocking to break Christina Keck's 2001 mark of 2:54.87. Mary Veith (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) was second in 2:52.44, also bettering Keck's old record. Kate Kohout (Clarence, NY/Clarence) finished third in 2:56.68. All three runners attained ECAC qualifying standards in the event.

Caitlin Godin (Rochester, NY/Greece-Arcadia) tied for second in the high jump, clearing 5-4.25 (1.63m).

Tina Villa (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) attained an ECAC qualifying distance in the women's shot put. Villa finished third with a toss of 44-10.75 (13.68m).

UB's 4x400-meter relay team also finished third on Saturday. The foursome of Desiree Rudloff (West Falls, NY/East Aurora), Jezorski, Stacy Downer (Philadelphia, PA/Dobbins/Randolph Tech) and Lisa Romano (Eden, NY/Eden) turned in a time of 3:59.33.

Both squads are back in action next Saturday at the Cornell Upstate Challenge in Ithaca.
