Commisso, McFarland Take MAC HonorsBUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo track and field athletes Mike Commisso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) and Biaunca McFarland (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) were selected as the Mid-American Conference's Male and Female Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week, the league office announced. Commisso, a senior environmental design major, established a new UB record at the Kent State Open winning the 800-meters in 1:51.50, breaking teammate Ben Moskel's (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) time of 1:55.54 set in 1999. The time was also a four second improvement over Commisso's top 800 time from last year. Commisso's time is also the fastest in the Mid-American Conference this season and qualifies him for the IC4A Championships in Boston in March. Commisso holds the Bulls' 800 outdoor record of 1:52.00 set during the 2000 spring season. McFarland earned the league nod thanks to her record setting performances this season in the triple jump. The sophomore psychology major opened the year by breaking Alycia Croak's 1999 triple jump record of 37-10.50 with a leap of 38-2 at the Colgate Invitational. McFarland followed by breaking that mark with a 39-8 showing at the Kent State Open, the best in the MAC this season. The jump qualified her for the ECAC Championships which will also be held in Boston in March. McFarland established the outdoor triple jump record during the spring 2000 campaign with a 39-0.25 mark. The UB men hold the top mark in eight of 16 events reported by the league while the women are tops in six of 16 events. Both squads are back in action on January 20 at the Cornell Invitational in Ithaca, NY. |
