Steve Esler enters his 11th year as a UB Bull. This will be his sixth year as a coach at UB as he also competed for the Blue and White for five years. The events that fall under Esler’s expertise include the high jump, javelin and combined events. He looks to continue a tradition of success in these areas this coming year with a strong contingent of athletes returning.

Under Esler’s tutelage, Patrice Coney won indoor and outdoor Mid-American Conference titles in the multi-events while also setting school records in the heptathlon and pentathlon. Esler coached Vanessa Roelofsen to gold in the javelin at the conference meet, where she also qualified for the regional meet. Esler’s 2006 recruiting class had an immediate impact with Russell Cameron (Junior National qualifier) scoring indoors and outdoors in the multi-events and Eugene Kennedy scoring in the conference meet in the high jump. Other successful contributors to Esler group were Caitlin Godin (high jump), who was an indoor and outdoor regional qualifier and All-MAC Second-Team honoree in 2009, Fatimah Hill, the 2009 MAC outdoor long jump champion and All-MAC First-Team selection, and Peter Godios who medaled in the javelin. Since 2005, javelin throwers Casey Garbaty, Katie Weston and Roelofsen have qualified for the NCAA East Regional Championships and all three have competed in the Canadian National Championships.

A Western New York native, Esler’s athletic accomplishments for the Bulls included individual Mid-American Conference championships in the decathlon and heptathlon as well as a berth in the NCAA and USA Combined Indoor Events Championships. While competing, he earned team MVP honors twice (indoor and outdoor) and was also voted UB’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2003. He owns school records in the high jump, decathlon, heptathlon, and pentathlon.

Esler has worked under Buffalo Sabres strength and conditioning coach Doug McKinney as a Speed and Power Specialist for Pro-Formance Training. He also served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Canisius College and is a certified USA Track and Field Level I coach. Never letting up from his constant search for more knowledge, he completed his Master’s Degree in biomechanics from UB in 2008.
