Division of Athletics
Student-Athlete Computing Lab
Policy and Guidelines

Welcome to the Division of Athletics Student-Athlete Computer Lab. This lab has been specifically designed for the use and needs of student-athletes at UB. Only current student-athletes will be able to log on to these computers. It is located on the first floor of Alumni Arena, Room 170.

LAB SETUP
There are a total of 10 computers in the Lab running Windows Operating Systems. These Windows based computers are connected to the Internet, and have the same configuration as all public computers throughout campus. In addition these computers have Maple and SPSS for Windows also installed.

The UBFS Home utility has been installed on the desktop of all workstations in the lab so that students may access their UB centralized storage space.

Once initialized, a student may save to this location by using the S: drive. Students may also access a file from the S: drive from any public site throughout the campus or from a remote location off campus if they install the UBFS Home Utility on their computer. (For installation information of UBFS on home computers please visit the following link: http://wings.buffalo.edu/computing/software/download/win/ubfshome.html.)

Files saved to the workstation in the user temp folder are deleted once the user logs off.

If the user follows the procedures below, they will minimize problems with lost or damaged files:

  • Open NT Explorer
  • Copy the file(s) you will be working with from your floppy/Zip drive to the S: drive. An easy way to do this is to select the file(s), click the right mouse button, and select copy. Then, open up the S: drive, click the right mouse button, and select paste.
  • Do all of your work on the file(s) on the S: drive.
  • When you are finished, copy all of your files from the S: drive back to your floppy/Zip disk if you want a separate copy as well.

There are currently two HP LaserJet network printers.

ACCOUNTS
In general, all students of the University are automatically provided a UBIT (ACSU) account when registering for classes. If you did not receive one or are having trouble accessing it, you must contact the CIT Help Desk - 255 Fronczak Hall, 645-3542, cit-helpdesk@buffalo.edu.

Access to the Student-Athlete Lab is NOT automatically granted when you receive a UBIT account. Access is granted ONLY after an UBIT account has been created, activated and the Office of Academic Services and Compliance have verified your student-athlete status.

If you believe your account has not be granted the appropriate access contact your Athlete Academic Advisor who will complete the appropriate form for you.

If at any time you share your UBIT username and password with anyone in order for that person to gain access to the SA lab, you will lose your SA lab privileges for the remainder of the academic year. Sharing usernames and passwords is a violation of UBIT policy, and could result in suspension of your account. For the complete UBIT policy, visit the following link: http://www.itpolicies.buffalo.edu/Conditions_Of_Use/

HOURS OF OPERATION
The normal hours of operation for the Student-Athlete Computer Lab during the Fall and Spring semesters are as follows:
Monday-Thursday  8 am - 9 pm
Friday  8 am - 5 pm
Sunday  1 pm - 5 pm

Look for special postings of changes in the lab's hours due to holidays, breaks, and summer.

SUPPORT
Division of Athletics Office of Technology Services maintains the lab. For paper please contact them at 645-6598, in room 165 Alumni Arena.

If you cannot log-in to the workstations, contact the Division of Athletics Office of Technology Services Helpdesk at 645-6598 or 165 Alumni and someone will assist you.

You must log out at the end of your session and secure any documents that you have saved on your UBFS space. Since all activity on lab machines is logged, you may be held responsible for an action performed by someone else using your account.

For assistance with the hardware in the lab you may contact Tech Services by email at ath-techservices@buffalo.edu, by phone at 645-6598 or in person in room 165. This office can handle only hardware support and login problems. All other requests for assistance should be directed to CIT Helpdesk.

Computing and Information Technology (CIT) has a help desk for setting up UBIT accounts and answering other computer related problems. It is located on the second floor of the Computing Center. Phone numbers for this site and other public computing sites on campus are as follows:

Baldy Hall 645-2386
Computing Center Help Desk 645-3542
Bell Hall 645-2797
Diefendorf Hall 829-3460
Capen (SEL) 645-3326
Clemens Hall 645-2333

GUIDELINES
All computer lab users are responsible for reading and following these guidelines.

  1. NO FOOD OR BEVERAGES:
Absolutely no food or beverages of any kind are allowed in the lab. This will be strictly enforced and violators will be asked to remove food/beverage or leave the lab. As careful as you may be, accidental spills can cause thousands of dollars in damages and loss of student assets. Repeat offenders may loose the privilege to use the lab.

  2. ACADEMIC WORK ONLY:
The Computer Lab is furnished with state-of-the-art workstations and software intended for meeting your academic requirements. Lab computers should not be used for online chatting, or other non-academic related activities, for which other public sites on campus are available. Students should be considerate of other students working in the lab and should practice working as quietly as possible without disturbing others.

  3. LOG-IN/LOG-OUT:
Log-in to the workstation with your UB IT name (the first part of your UB email address). Your default password (until you change it) is your four (4) digit birthday (mmdd) followed by the last six (6) digits of your UBCard number (under your picture). For instance, if your birthday is June 16th and the last six digits of your UBCard are 123456, then your password would be 0616123456.

  4. SERVER ACCESS/FILE SAVING/BACKUPS:
Your UBFS space is the only network space you have access to. Files saved to this folder are written across the network and are available to you from any campus computer. Use this space as your backup if you have the tendency to use floppy disks. Disks fail frequently. You can also use a zip disk for storage of your information since they are more reliable than floppy disks.

  5. PRINTING:
This is not a public lab and therefore is not funded by your student technology fee. In order to keep printing free the following guidelines should be strictly adhered to.

Printers are for course related material only. For large print jobs, please use a public computing site.

Print carefully - each user is allowed to print up to 300 pages for the Fall Semester, 300 pages for the Spring Semester, and 150 pages for both the Summer Sessions combined. Once quota is met for a user, printing will not be available for that user until the start of the next semester.

If the printers need paper please contact Tech Services in 165 Alumni Arena at 645-6598.

  6. INSTALLING SOFTWARE:
Users may not install any software on lab workstations. AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger, Gnutella clients and other peer-to-peer file or messaging applications are strictly prohibited because of bandwidth drain, serious security risks and OS conflicts.

  7. LAB ACCESS:
The lab is available on a 1st-come/1st-served basis during posted hours. If you leave your machine unattended for more than 10 minutes you will be automatically logged-out and another person may use your machine.

  8. WIRELESS ACCESS:
This lab is equipped with UB Wireless. To access UB Wireless, follow the directions and guidelines from the UB Wireless website.

  9. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY:
It is expected that students will read, understand and comply with cooperate with the above policies on an honor system. Students not in compliance with these policies may lose lab privileges or be held responsible for damages. If you have any comments or questions about these policies please contact your Athlete Academic advisor immediately with details. Any changes in policy will be publicized through the Athlete listserv and postings in the Lab.
