McDowell Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week Men's diver earns league recognition BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo junior diver Michael McDowell has been named the Mid-American Conference's Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
McDowell, a mathematics major with a 3.586 grade point average, won three of four events in UB's two swim meets against MAC foes Eastern Michigan and Ball State last weekend. At Eastern Michigan on Friday November 7, McDowell finished with a six-dive total of 306.15 points, for the Buffalo win on the one-meter board. The next day, McDowell took first-place finishes at Ball State as he swept the one and three-meter events, scoring 310.35 on the one-meter and 378.83 on the three-meter. McDowell, who represented UB at last season's NCAA Championships, won the three-meter event by more than 100 points over the second-place finisher and was less than five points off the school record, which McDowell set last season. The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives. The Bulls hit the water next for the three-day Akron Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron, starting December 5.
