Buffalo Swimming and Diving Defeats Ball State

Eight Swimmers Post Double First Place Finishes

Muncie, IN- The University at Buffalo men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated MAC foe Ball State, as the men’s team won 130-109 and the women’s squad triumphed to a 160-137 victory, on Saturday afternoon at Lewellen Aquatic Center. The win brings the men’s record to 1-2 (1-1 MAC) and the women advance to 3-2 (2-2 MAC).

The men’s team won nine of 13 events, with five swimmers winning individual events for the Bulls. Senior Zach Ruske and freshman Jake Sangren each scored a pair of wins, as Ruske finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:45.81) and the 100 freestyle (47.69), while Sangren led the way in the 200 IM (1:59.58) and 200 backstroke (1:55.24). Connor Vander Zalm finished first in the 1000 freestyle (9:59.76), and Scott Woster posted a first place finish for the Bulls, winning the 200 butterfly in 1:57.23.

Michael McDowell swept the diving events for the men’s side, scoring well above the competition, with a one-meter score of 310.35, and scoring more than 100 points above the second place finisher in the three-meter event, with a score of 378.83. Meili Carpenter swept the diving events for the women, posting 284.47 on the one-meter board, and 289.73 in the three-meter event.

On the women’s side, the Bulls won 13 of 16 events, to easily defeat the Cardinals. Jordan Deren, Rachel Sorg, Brynn Marecki and Jessie Koltz each posted two individual wins. Deren swept the distance events, finishing first in the 1000 freestyle (10:27.81) and 500 freestyle (5:09.34). Sorg handled the backstroke events for Buffalo, winning the 100 backstroke (59.94) and 200 backstroke (2:10.14). Marecki picked up a pair of victories in the breaststroke events, finishing the 200 breaststroke in 2:25.03, and the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.10. Koltz was a triple winner, taking first place finishes in the 50 freestyle (24.65), 100 freestyle (54.56) and the 100 butterfly (58.90).

Alie Schirmers also picked up an individual win, finishing the 200 freestyle in 1:56.88.

The Bulls will rest for the remainder of November. They hit the water next for the three-day Akron Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron, starting December 5.
