Jordan Deren Named MAC Swimmer of the Week

Jordan Deren earned the Mid-American Conference Swimmer of the Week Award based on her performance against Duquesne on Friday, October 23. Deren swept both distance events, placing first in the 1000 freestyle (10:28.05), as well as the 500 freestyle (5:05.04), with the closest Duquesne competition nearly ten seconds behind. Deren was also a member of the winning 400 freestyle relay team that finished in a time of 3:34.64.

Women’s Swimming and Diving Falls at Miami In MAC Opener

The meet opened in dramatic fashion with the Bulls missing out on a first-place relay finish by just two-tenths of second, as the 200 medley relay team of Jessica Ballard, Brynn Marecki, Jessie Koltz and Caroline Simmons finished second in a time of 1:45.30, just behind Miami’s “A” relay that finished in 1:45.10. Deren won the next event for the Bulls, winning the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:26.09, more than seven seconds ahead of the RedHawk competition. Deren also took a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:06.54. Simmons swept the sprint events, taking the 50 freestyle in a time of 23.97 and the 100 freestyle in 52.40. Carpenter won the diving events, taking first on the one-meter with a score of 314.03, and first on the three-meter with 270.08 points. The final 400 freestyle relay team of Deren, Sam Palma, Koltz and Simmons also picked up a win for Buffalo finishing in a time of 3:30.83, but it was not enough as the Bulls dropped their first MAC meet of the season.

Carpenter Sets New School Record as Bulls Drop Fall To Ohio

The Bulls took an early lead with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay as the foursome of Ballard, Marecki, Palma and Simmons swam to a time of 3:52.60. The next Buffalo win came from Marecki in the 100 breaststroke as she touched out the Ohio competition with a time of 1:06.17. Marecki also placed first in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.43). Freshmen duo Logan Mason and Dani Adank took a 1-2 finish in the 200 butterfly, finishing in times of 2:08.50 and 2:10.32, respectively. Simmons also picked up a first-place win for the Bulls, winning the 100 freestyle in a time of 52.36. Carpenter posted impressive scores on the board, sweeping the one and three-meter events for the second day in a row. Carpenter took first in the one-meter event with a score of 304.35, as well as the three-meter event with a score of 345.30, breaking her own school record set last season, as well as breaking the Ohio Aquatic Center pool record.

Up Next 

The Bulls will return home and join the men in hosting a pair of MAC meets this weekend at UB’s Alumni Arena Natatorium. The teams will take on Eastern Michigan on Friday, November 6 at 5 pm and then host Ball State at 1 pm on Saturday, November 7.
