McDowell Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week Men’s diver earns league recognition for the second time this season BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo junior Michael McDowell has been named the Mid-American Conference’s Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Week. This is the second time in the 2008-2009 season the UB diver has been honored with the award, the first time being in November.
McDowell, a mathematics major with a 3.662 grade point average, earned his second consecutive trip to the NCAA Swimming and Diving National Championships by placing second in the platform diving event at the NCAA Zone A Championships at UB. McDowell ended the platform competition with a total score of 600.20 points, finishing just behind Navy’s Jonathan Galinski with 613.25. McDowell was fifth on the three-meter board on Saturday and the one-meter board on Friday. The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week’s competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference’s faculty athletic representatives. McDowell will be diving in the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Meet in College Station, TX next weekend, March 26-28.
