UB Swimming and Diving Weekly ReleaseClick here for a PDF version of the release Buffalo Hosts NCAA Zone A Meet The NCAA Zone A qualifying event was held at the University at Buffalo?s Alumni Arena Natatorium last weekend. The top qualifiers from each event advance to the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving meet being held in College Station, TX later this month. Other qualifying meets were held in Knoxville, Minneapolis, Austin and Columbia, MO last weekend.
Carpenter and McDowell Qualify for NCAA Meet University at Buffalo divers Meili Carpenter and Michael McDowell qualified for the NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships after their performances in the platform diving event on Sunday afternoon. Carpenter finished first overall, while McDowell finished second on the platform to qualify them for the second consecutive year. Day One: Men's One-meter, Women's Three-Meter In the first day of competition, the men competed in the three-meter springboard event and the women competed on the one-meter board. Carpenter and McDowell both finished fifth overall. Carpenter ended day one with a three-meter score of 570.40, while McDowell finished the one-meter event with 584.50 points. Pittsburgh's Alex Volovetski won the men's one-meter event with 778.50 points, while Drexel's Kate Hynes won the women's three-meter event with a 12 dive score of 669.60.
Day Two: Men's Three-Meter, Women's One-Meter Carpenter and McDowell finishing fourth overall and fifth overall, in the one-meter and three-meter events, respectively. After the preliminary round, Carpenter was in second place with 280.40, but dropped to fourth after the final round, scoring a total of 541.80 points for 12 dives. McDowell entered the final round of diving in third place, finishing six dives with a total of 354.60 points. He ended the meet in fifth place with a 12 dive total of 694.00 points in the three-meter event. Volovetski and Hynes won placed first in their respective events for the second consecutive day. Platform Diving The platform event was the third and final event of the weekend. After the preliminary round, Carpenter led the women with a five-dive score of 252.35. McDowell was in second place after the men?s preliminary round, finishing six dives with a score of 306.65. Both divers held on to their places after the final round, ultimately qualifying them for the NCAA meet. Carpenter finished first overall with a ten-dive total of 488.75. McDowell ended the meet in second place with a total score of 600.20 points, finishing just behind Navy?s Jonathan Galinski with 613.25. This is the second consecutive year that both Carpenter and McDowell have made the NCAA meet. Up Next The women's NCAA meet is coming up this weekend, March 19-21 in College Station, TX. The men's meet will be March 26-28 in College Station, TX.
