Day Two of Zone A Diving Meet Wraps Up Carpenter finishes fouth and McDowell places fifth in second day of competition Women's One-Meter Results BUFFALO, NY- The second day of the 2009 Zone A Diving Championships wrapped up Saturday afternoon at the University at Buffalo's Alumni Arena Natatorium. The men's three-meter springboard and the women's one-meter springboard were contested this afternoon. Pittsburgh's Alex Volovetski won the men's three-meter board, while Drexel's Kate Hynes won the women's one-meter event. Both Volovetski and Hynes won their respective events yesterday as well.
Meili Carpenter and Michael McDowell competed for Buffalo, finishing fourth overall and fifth overall, respectively. After the preliminary round, Carpenter was in second place with 280.40, but dropped to fourth after the final round, scoring a total of 541.80 points for 12 dives on the one-meter board. McDowell entered the final round of diving in third place, finishing six dives with a total of 354.60 points. He ended the meet in fifth place with a 12 dive total of 694.00 points in the three-meter event. Volovetski won his event for the second day in a row, earning 765.55 points in 12 dives. Andre Watson from Boston University took second with 705.70 points and UMass-Amherst's Jason Cook placed third with a point total of 702.15. On the women's one-meter board, Hynes won her event for the second consecutive day. She finished with a 12 dive score of 614.80. Amanda Burke from Rutgers took second with 575.15 points and Princeton's Kathrine Giarra rounded out the top three, finishing with 558.80 points.
A total of 29 men and 25 women comprised Saturday's fields. After six preliminary dives, the field was narrowed to the top 18 point scorers in both competitions for the final round which consisted of six additional dives. The scores from the preliminary round and the final round were added together to determine the winners. The winners of zone championships advance to the NCAA Championships later this month. Five zone meets are being held this weekend with Buffalo, Knoxville, TN, Minneapolis, Austin, TX and Columbia, MO serving as host sites. Competition concludes Sunday with the platform diving event set to start at noon at Alumni Arena Natatorium.
