Diving Championships Complete Day One

McDowell and Carpenter finish fifth in their events

BUFFALO, NY- The first day of the 2009 Zone A Diving Championships were completed Friday afternoon at the University at Buffalo's Alumni Arena Natatorium. Pittsburgh's Alex Volovetski won the men's one-meter event, while Drexel's Kate Hynes won the women's three-meter springboard.

Volovetski won his event for the second year in a row, earning a total of 778.50 points in 12 dives. Volovetski led the competition by more than 100 points and set a new Alumni Arena Natatorium record, shattering the old record of 602.00, set in 2003 by Penn State. Jason Cook from UMass-Amherst finished second with 641.25 and Andre Watson of Boston University took third with 588.00 points.

On the women's three-meter board, Hynes won her event for the second consecutive year as well. She finished with a 12 dive score of 669.60. Princeton's Kathrine Giarra took second with a score of 625.95 and Amanda Burke from Rutgers finished third with 602.65 points.

Meili Carpenter and Michael McDowell competed in today's events for Buffalo. Both divers finished fifth overall. Carpenter ended the day with a three-meter score of 570.40, while McDowell finished the one-meter event with 584.50 points.

A total of 30 men and 27 women comprised Friday's fields. After six preliminary dives, the field was narrowed to the top 16 point scorers in both competitions for the final round which consisted of six additional dives.

The winners of zone championships advance to the NCAA Championships later this month. Five zone meets are being held this weekend with Buffalo, Knoxville, TN, Minneapolis, Austin, TX, and Columbia, MO serving as host sites.

Competition continues Saturday at noon with the women's one-meter and men's three-meter events. Platform diving will be contested on Sunday at noon.
