YPSILANTI, MI - The University at Buffalo
men’s swimming and diving team continued its record breaking
weekend at the 2010 MAC Championships, breaking five school records in
the second day of competition. The Bulls now sit in second place out of
seven teams.

Night two started with a record breaking performance in the 200
medley relay as the team of Matt
Schwippert, Josh
Meints, Cory
Zorsch and Andrew
Tamchyna finished third in a time of 1:30.63 Connor
Vander Zalm kicked off the individual events with a fifth-place
finish in the 400 IM, finishing in a time of 4:00.00. Freshman
Schwippert broke two individual school records on the night, breaking
the 100 butterfly (48.91) and 100 backstroke (48.14) records, while
finishing second overall in both events. Fellow freshman Matt
Hogan also picked up second-place points and a school record in the
200 freestyle, finishing in a time of 1:38.30, bettering the time of
1:39.15 set in 2000. Jared
Heine finished fourth in the 200 freestyle, swimming to a
lifetime-best time of 1:39.32 and Simon
Proudfoot took eighth in a season-best time of 1:41.60.

Zorsch also had a successful night for Buffalo, picking up
eight-place points in the 100 butterfly in a season-best time of 50.27,
and took 10th in the 100 backstroke in a lifetime-best time of 51.79. Chris
Berloth (50.73) and Chad
Miller (51.42) finished 11th and 15th, respectively, in the 100
butterfly, while Zach
Ruske took the seventh-place spot in the 100 backstroke, in a
lifetime-best time of 50.94. Meints placed seventh in the 100
breaststroke, swimming to a time of 57.38. Meints broke the school
record with his preliminary swim this morning, finishing the event in a
time of 56.71. Jordan
Matthews (58.10) and Christian
Muller (58.17) finished 13th and 14th, respectively, in the 100
breaststroke consolation final. The Bulls closed the night with another
relay record, as Ruske, Proudfoot, Hogan and Heine placed second in the
800 freestyle relay with a time of 6:40.70, bettering the old record
set last season.
The Bulls move into second place after today’s events with
417.5 points. Eastern Michigan continues to lead the way with 459
points. Behind Buffalo in the ranks is Missouri State (397), Miami
(366.5), Southern Illinois (336), Ball State (167.5) and Evansville
(106.5).
