Men's Swimming Kicks Off MAC/Sun Belt Championships

Two Relays Set School Record in First Day of Competition

NASHVILLE, TN - The University at Buffalo men's swimming and diving team opened the MAC/Sun Belt Swimming Championships on Wednesday night in Nashville, Tennessee. The men scored some impressive finishes in the first day of competition, including two new school records in the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay.

UB's first record breaking performance came from Jake Sangren, Jordan Matthews, Scott Woster and Chad Miller in the 200 medley relay, posting a time of 1:31.38, bettering the time of 132.12 set in 1992. In the 800 freestyle relay, the team of Zach Ruske, Simon Proudfoot, Jared Heine and Connor Vander Zalm finished seventh overall and second among MAC schools with a time of 6:41.60, a full three seconds better than the previous record set in 1998. The men beat out MAC competition from Miami and Ball State in both events.

In diving, Michael McDowell placed fourth overall and third in the MAC on the three-meter board with a score of 358.10, finishing behind two divers from Miami among MAC entrants. Clayton Sutton (246.00) and Colin Patrican (196.10) picked up points in the preliminary three-meter event, placing 12th and 24th, respectively.

UB stands fifth overall and third among MAC schools in the team standings with 128 points. MAC rival Miami leads the overall race with 180 points, while Eastern Michigan finished the first day second overall, with 162 points. Ball State rounds out the MAC competition, standing in ninth place with 86 points.

Competition continues through Saturday.
