Deren and Connor Vander Zalm each pick up two individual wins
BINGHAMTON,
NY – The
University at Buffalo men’s and women’s swimming
and diving team picked up another road win with a clean sweep of
Binghamton this afternoon, as the women’s team defeated the
Bearcats 134-105, while the men’s team won by a score of
137-103. The women’s team moves to 5-2 (2-2 MAC), with the
men’s team holding a record of 4-1 (1-1 MAC).

opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay as Jessica
Ballard, Brynn
Marecki, Sam
Eckert and Jessie
Koltz touched out Binghamton by
less than a tenth of a second to finish in a time of 3:57.74, setting
the precedence for the remainder of the meet. Alisa
Koopman won the first individual
event on the women’s side, picking up first-place points in
the 1,000 freestyle (10:50.33). Jordan
Deren was a double winner,
taking the 200 freestyle (1:55.89) as well as the 500 freestyle
(5:08.90). Koltz and freshman Caroline
Simmons tied in the 50 freestyle
event, both finishing in a time of 24.22. Freshman Dani
Adank also picked up a win for
the Bulls, winning the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:08.92.
On the men’s side,
the 400 medley relay of Zach
Ruske, Josh
Meints, Cory
Zorsch and Matt
Hogan took first place with a
time of 3:30.00. Distance specialist Connor
Vander Zalm won the 1,000
freestyle (9:49.60), as well as the 500 freestyle (4:46.62). Vander
Zalm touched out the Bearcats competition in the 500 freestyle by a
hundreth of a second to take the win. Other first-place
finishes came from Meints in the 200 IM (1:58.58), Zorsch in the 200
butterfly (1:58.75), Jared
Heine in the 100 freestyle
(47.66) and Matt
Schwippert in the 200 backstroke
(1:53.39).

The Buffalo divers also had a
successful afternoon, as Meili
Carpenter swept both the
one-meter and three-meter events, scoring 286.12 on the one-meter board
and 301.12 on the three-meter board. Teammate Ursula
Jeske took second in both
events, earning 219.30 points in the one-meter event and 195.60 in the
three-meter event. For the men, Colin
Patrican took first in the
one-meter event with a score of 278.02, while teammate Kenny
Rhoades finished first in the
three-meter event with a score of 288.15.
“I was pleased with
how we swam. I saw a lot of good things today, especially with
travelling and just coming off the Niagara meet,” said head
coach Andy Bashor. “We raced well, but now we have to focus
on next weekend. We have a big weekend coming up and we need to prepare
for that.”
Both teams will be back in
action this weekend, with the women’s team traveling to
Akron for a conference meet against the Zips on Friday, January 22 at
5:00 pm. The men’s team will host Miami in a 1:00 pm meet on
Saturday, January 23 at Alumni Arena Natatorium.
