Buffalo Barrels Over Binghamton

14 Bulls Earn First Place Finishes

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams easily defeated Binghamton at the Alumni Arena Natatorium on Sunday afternoon. The women beat the Bearcats by a score of 140-81, while the men won with a score of 126-91. The match marked the first meet after a month long hiatus from competition to improve the women's record to 4-2 (2-2 MAC) and the men's record to 2-2 (1-1 MAC).

The women won nine out of 12 events, including the first eight, as the team rallied past the Bearcats. Kim Dale won the first individual event for the Bulls, earning a season best time, 10:38.82 in the 1000 freestyle. Other first place finishes came from Jordan Deren in the 200 freestyle (1:56.04), Catherine Scharf in the 50 freestyle (24.96), and Caitlin Reilly in the 200 IM (2:14.69), sending the Bulls into the first round of diving up 76-18. After the break, the women came back with three more first place finishes from Alie Schirmers in the 200 butterfly (2:11.46), Keri Chandler in the 100 freestyle (55.43), and Jessica Ballard in the 500 freestyle (5:15.52).

The men also won nine of their 12 events. Connor Vander Zalm swept the distance events, earning first in the 1000 freestyle (9:46.58) and the 500 freestyle (4:46.63). Chad Miller also took two first place finishes for the Bulls, winning the 50 freestyle in 21.78 and the 100 freestyle (47.31). Jared Heine won the 200 freestyle (1:44.37), while Chris Berloth won the 200 butterfly (1:57.90) and Jake Sangren took the 100 backstroke in 1:54.63 to round out the men's first place finishes. Overall, fourteen Bulls took home individual wins.

For the next meet, the men will travel to MAC rival Miami (OH), Saturday January 17, at 5:00 pm. The men will then return home to join the women in hosting local rival Niagara on Friday January 23 at 6:00 pm at Alumni Arena Natatorium.
