Student-Athlete Services/CHAMPS Life Skills
Community Service
The student-athletes at the University at Buffalo participate regularly in outreach
activities throughout the Western New York community. On a team and individual
basis, student-athletes are involved in programs that allow for "giving back" in
community based settings, educational settings, healthcare centers, and other
areas. The UB student-athletes take great pride in their commitment to making a
positive difference in the lives of others.

Annual Events Include:
Care Wears
CareWears is a program which centers around building the self-esteem and
self-confidence of middle and grade school children in the Western New York
Community. With the help of Aeropostale, UB Athletics will be coordinating our
5th CareWears event in May of 2008! Each year, a new WNY school is selected to
participate in the CareWears event. The school coordinates an art contest,
from which the selected winners are then invited to a day of fun and shopping
with the UB athletes! Contest winners are paired with a UB Athlete Mentor, and
spend the day at the mall shopping at Aeropostale, having lunch, and spending
time with their mentor!

Linda Yalem Memorial Run
The annual Linda Yalem Safety Run is a 5k run/walk held at the University at
Buffalo's North Campus to promote runner and walker safety. Now in its 17th year,
the Yalem Run is one of the most popular races in Western New York, and is a
qualifying race for the Buffalo News "Runner of the Year" series. Each year, UB
welcomes over 1,000 runners, walkers and supporters who believe in the importance
of taking control over our own personal safety, and to remember Linda Yalem, a UB
student who was raped and murdered while running near UB in 1990. UB
student-athletes from many of our teams participate and volunteer in this event
each year!

Linda Yalem Safety Run Web page
National Girls and Women in Sports Day: (NGWSD)
NGWSD is held to honor female athletic achievement and to recognize the
importance of sports and fitness participation for all girls and women. Annually,
the Division of Athletics sponsors a celebration which includes presentations/appearances
by accomplished female athletes, as well as NGWSD themed community outreach events
such as school visits, shadow day, and an all youth sports clinic. If you would
like more information, go to the NGWSD web page
Ronald McDonald House
The local Buffalo chapter of the Ronald McDonald House provides a "home away
from home" for families of seriously ill children who are receiving treatment in
the Western New York area. UB student-athletes volunteer at the Ronald McDonald
house by purchasing food and preparing meals for the families who are staying in
the house.
If you would like more information on any of these events, you can contact Kellie
Peiper at 716-645-6472.
