Breanne Nasti Named to Mideast Region Softball Second Team
Nasti, the Bulls' Newcomer of the Year in 2001, set UB single-season records for hits (59), doubles (18), home runs (10) and RBIs (43) in her first season of collegiate competition. Her 18 doubles, 10 home runs and 43 RBIs are also UB career records, and her 59 hits on the year tied the school career mark. Nasti also posted a .690 slugging percentage and a .435 on-base percentage, both tops on the team. She finished the year with a .309 batting average in MAC games only, and she was named MAC East Player of the Week twice during the season. Nasti had 16 multiple-hit games during the year, and she drove in a season-high nine runs in a 13-2 Buffalo win over IUPUI on March 18, going 4-for-5 from the plate with three doubles and a home run. She also turned in a 4-for-4 performance with two doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs against Texas Southern on February 9. Defensively, the left-handed Nasti saw time in her natural position in center field during the first half of the season and at shortstop in the last half of the season, committing just 17 errors in 184 chances for a .908 fielding percentage. "This honor is a great way to wrap up Breanne's freshman season," said head coach Marie Curran. "It's so nice to see all of her hard work and desire pay off. She's going to have a tremendous career at UB, and we're looking forward to the next three years." Nasti is the second member of UB's softball program to earn All-Region honors. Sophomore Jennifer Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi (Ont.) District) was chosen as the designated player on the Northeast Region Second Team last year in Buffalo's first season of Division I softball competition. Buffalo competed as an independent in the Northeast Region in 2000 but moved to the Mideast Region beginning with the 2001 season, the Bulls' first competing in softball in the Mid-American Conference. Nasti is joined by five other members of the MAC on the 2001 Mideast Region teams: Nichole Corrigan (Marshall, second base, first team), Le Ann Fonner (Kent State, third base, first team), Marci Ridenbaugh (Kent State, shortstop, first team), Vanessa Clarkson (Marshall, third base, second team) and Keri Brisnehan (Miami, outfield, second team). Nasti and the other members of each All-Region team are now eligible for All-America
honors, which will be voted on by an All-America selection committee on Monday, May 21. |
