AKRON, OH - The University at Buffalo softball team stayed alive at the 2005 MAC Tournament with a decisive 2-0 win over eighth-seeded Kent State this afternoon at Firestone Stadium in Akron, OH. The Golden Flashes were coming off a 3-2 loss to top-seeded Marshall earlier in the day, and the loss ends their season at 25-27. With the win, Buffalo improves to 22-27 overall.

The Bulls, the tournament’s fifth seed, struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem) led off with a bloop single to center field, and a sacrifice bunt by freshman Laura Kor (Beaverton, OR/Westview) then moved pinch runner Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) over to second. Designated player Lisa Wheat (Olympia, WA/Tumwater) followed with a line drive single to left field that was mishandled by Kent State fielder Abby Molnar, allowing Greene to come all the way home for the first run of the game.

Senior Ann Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) gave the Bulls a larger cushion with a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning, and that’s all senior pitcher Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) would need for support. Evans allowed just four hits in the complete game for her 12th win and fifth shutout of the season. KSU starter Brittney Robinson took the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits in three innings. Erin Christoper pitched the final three innings and gave up just one hit and no runs.

The Bulls will play No. 2 Central Michigan (27-15) at 12:30 pm on Friday. The Chippewas are coming off an 8-2 loss to No. 3 Miami tonight. The winner of the game will face top-seeded Marshall (37-18) at 5:30 pm on Friday.
