Bulls Take One of Three From Youngstown

The Bulls played a rare tripleheader Saturday afternoon as they hosted Youngstown State to complete season. A first inning grand slam by Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering) held up as the Bulls defeated the Penguins 4-2 in game one. Starting pitcher Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) picked up the win getting out a jam in the top of the seventh with a pair of runners on and the go-ahead run at the plate.

UB dropped game two, 2-1, as a Bulls seventh inning rally fell short. Malone connected on her second home run of the day and sixth of the season for the lone UB run. Strong pitching by Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) not allowing an earned run and strong defense forced Youngstown to strand 12 runners in the contest leaving the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth.

UB's defense was their downfall in the final game of the day as the Bulls committed nine errors in the 9-2 loss. All nine runs in the contest were unearned. YSU sent 11 batters to the plate in a seven-run fourth inning that saw UB commit five errors. The Bulls led 2-0 after the first inning as Danielle Haynes (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) scored on a wild pitch and Malone got Jennifer Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi District) home on an RBI groundout.

UB Drops Pair at Niagara

The Bulls were swept by Niagara 8-0 and 9-7 on Tuesday. In the second game, UB took a 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of sixth thanks to a three-run double by Jennifer Moore. Niagara rallied for five runs of their own in the bottom of the inning as Brooke Bradburn plated the winning run with an RBI single.

At the Plate

For the season the Bulls hit .244 and compiled a .284 average in the final four games. Danielle Haynes finished the season as the Bulls' leading hitter with a .373 average hitting leadoff for the second half of the season. Her 41 hits are a single-season record and she was a perfect 11-of-11 on her stolen base opportunities. Jennifer Moore was second on the club with her .322 average and single-season record seven doubles. Kelly Malone led the team with 22 RBIs and a single-season and career record six homers. Stacee Madden (Corning, NY/East) added six doubles and 14 RBIs.

On the Mound

The Bulls' pitching staff finished the season with a team earned run average of 5.91, not allowing an earned run in the final two games. UB's pitching was dealt a blow when Jessica York (South Dayton, NY/Pine Valley) suffered a cracked rib and will apply for a medical redshirt. York led the squad with her 4.83 ERA compiling a 2-5 record. Jessica Kensy led the team with three wins lowering her ERA to 5.22 with 29 strikeouts splitting her time between the mound and second base. Left-hander Andrea Sage led the club with 115.2 innings pitched, 41 strikeouts and 15 complete games. She set the single season record for appearances with 27, games started (20) as well as innings pitched.

Saying Goodbye

Two members of the Bulls 2000 squad are saying goodbye now that the season has come to a close. Senior centerfielder KIm Coon (Belding, MI/Belding), after playing four years for the UB women's basketball team, finished the season with a .243 average breaking an 0-for-24 slump with two hits in her final contest against Youngstown State on Saturday. Coon led the team with four sacrifices and also was 4-of-4 as a base stealer. Assistant coach Stephanie DeFeo is leaving the UB program to take the reins as head coach at East Tennessee State as the Buccaneers begin their softball program. ETSU is a member of the Southern Conference.
