Mary Russell Named To All-MAC Second Team

Senior led Bulls with .377 batting average in MAC games

BUFFALO, NY- University at Buffalo senior Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego) has been named to the All-Mid-American Conference Second Team, as chosen by the league’s head coaches.

Russell ended the season as Buffalo’s top hitter, sporting a .317 batting average (40-for-126). She led the Bulls in RBIs (25), hits (40), doubles (9), stolen bases (16) and was tied for second on the team in walks (10) and home runs (4). In 2004, Russell stole 15 bases to become Buffalo’s all-time single season stolen base leader, a record she broke this season with 16 stolen bases. She also holds the Bulls’ career record for stolen bases (63). She is currently situated second all-time in career hits (161) and career doubles (36), third all-time in career RBIs (57), fourth in all-time career batting average (.276) and first in all-time career at bats (576).

Russell, an outfielder, led the Bulls in 2008 MAC games with a .377 batting average (20-for-53) and produced a stellar final week of play, finishing the week of April 28 with a .563 batting average (9-for-16) with 10 RBIs, two home runs and a 1.000 slugging percentage while helping the Bulls to a 5-1 record on the week and earning her second MAC East Player of the Week award.

Russell went deep twice in the Bulls’ 13-5 win over Syracuse on Wednesday, April 30, hitting a two-run homer and a grand slam, ultimately finishing the day 6-for-7 from the plate while helping Buffalo complete a sweep of the Orange. In addition, Russell drew three walks and ended the week with a .600 on base percentage, four stolen bases and zero strikeouts.

The Bulls produced a strong finish to the 2008 season, winning five of their last six and three MAC games, including a split with Eastern Michigan and a sweep of Central Michigan. Overall, Buffalo finished 2008 with a 10-32 record (5-13 MAC).
