Bulls Collide With Hard Hitting Miami Squad
Playing its second-to-last Mid-American Conference opponent of the season, the University at Buffalo Bulls softball team traveled to Oxford, OH to take on the Miami University RedHawks in a league doubleheader on Friday, May 4. A potent Miami offense stymied the Bulls, however, as Buffalo came up on the short end of the stick twice, dropping the day’s opening game 15-0 and later falling in the nightcap, 9-0. Softball Concludes Season At Ball State Wrapping up its 2007 season on the road, the University at Buffalo softball team took on Ball State in Muncie, IN playing the Cardinals in single games on both Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6. The Bulls were upended twice, falling to the Cardinals 7-0 on Saturday and bested by BSU on Sunday, 9-0. In the first game of the series, sophomore catcher Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) had a hit in the game for the Bulls while junior Margo Schramm (Phoenix, AZ/Catalina Foothills/Iowa Lakes CC) recorded her first hit of the season, a bunt-single in the top of the sixth inning. Base-Burgler
Freshman rightfielder Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy) broke into the UB single-season record book in her first season as a Bull, entering a four-way tie for third place in stolen bases. Gaetano joins current teammates Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) and Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) along with another former player on the list. Additionally, Hansen’s 10 swiped bases this season places her second all-time in the category. Filling In The Gaps Plagued by injuries, the Bulls struggled to fill in both offensive and defensive gaps in 2007. Fortunately, for the young squad, UB will return 18 of 20 players on its expanded roster. After redshirting in 2007 following season-ending shoulder surgery, pitcher Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) will return for her final year of eligibility in 2008. In addition, outfielder Russell will also return for an additional year after taking a medical redshirt in 2007. Projected starters this season, freshmen Kristen Gallipani (Brewster, NY/Brewster) and Katie Ivancich (Dyer, IN/Andrean) along with sophomore Ashley Kanavy (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) will all return to aid the Bulls in 2008. Buffalo also looks forward to the experience that Wendy Sheehan (Orange, CA/El Modena/Bowling Green) a transfer from MAC-foe Bowling Green will provide after sitting out the year due to NCAA transfer rules. Lastly, late-season roster additions Ashley Turner (Olean, NY/Olean) and Jenna Beall-Schwab (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) will have one and two years, respectively, of eligibility remaining in 2008.
