Softball Weekly ReleaseBULLS CRUSH NIAGARA
The Bulls swept local rival Niagara on Wednesday, winning both ends of a doubleheader by 8-0 and 11-2 scores. Both games ended in six innings as per the NCAA's eight-run rule, marking a vast improvement for the Bulls over last season when Niagara defeated them by eight or more runs on three different occasions. The 8-0 win in the opener was Buffalo's first shutout win of the season and the first for freshman pitcher Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield), who allowed just three hits and struck out five. The Bulls scored in all but two of the 12 innings played on the afternoon, and they outhit the Purple Eagles by a 22-8 margin. Freshman Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) led the Bulls with six RBIs and six hits in the two games, including a double, a triple and a home run. Freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and sophomore Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) drove in three runs apiece in the doubleheader.
BULLS CLOSE OUT SEASON WITH 7-1 WIN AT MIAMI
The Bulls then ended the 2001 season on a strong note, taking a 7-1 decision from the Miami RedHawks in the final game of a three-game weekend series in Oxford, OH. A double by sophomore Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering) scored freshman Marce Ross (Barrie, Ontario/St. Peter's) with the first run of the game in the first inning, and Buffalo then added three more runs in the third on two hits to take a 4-0 lead. Freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) scored on a two-out, bases-loaded wild pitch by Miami's Amber Arnold, and a single by sophomore Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) drove in two more UB runs. Buffalo then took advantage of three Miami errors in the sixth inning to put three more runs across the plate. Nasti's fielder's choice scored sophomore Laura Gilcrist (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North), an error by Miami's Kristina Mortaloni scored Ross, and a single by freshman Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) scored Nasti to give the Bulls a comfortable 7-0 lead. Miami's Mary Neal singled in the seventh, stole second and third, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Keri Brisnehan, but that was the only run the RedHawks would put across the plate. Robbins earned the win on the mound, striking out seven and allowing just six hits. The Bulls suffered 6-2 and 5-4 losses to the RedHawks in the first two games of the series. Freshman Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) hit her fourth career home run in the series opener, and Robbins drove in two runs in Saturday's 5-4 loss.
NASTI ENDS RECORD-SETTING SEASON
Freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) finished her freshman year with numerous single-season and career records to her credit, including single-season hits (59), single-season and career doubles (18), single-season and career home runs (10) and single-season and career RBIs (43). Her 59 hits also tie the UB career record. Nasti finished the year with a .373 batting average overall and a .309 average in MAC games only.
ROUND ENDS FRESHMAN CAMPAIGN ON A HIGH NOTE
