Mary Russell Named MAC East Player Of The WeekBUFFALO, NY- University at Buffalo softball player Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego) was named MAC East Player of the Week, as announced by the conference Tuesday afternoon.
Russell finished the week with a .563 batting average (9-for-16) with 10 RBIs, two homeruns and a 1.000 slugging percentage while helping the Bulls to a 5-1 record on the week. The senior outfielder went deep twice in the Bulls’ 13-5 win over Syracuse on Wednesday, April 30, hitting a two-run homer and a grand slam, ultimately finishing the day 6-for-7 from the plate while helping Buffalo complete a sweep of the Orange. In addition, Russell drew three walks and ended the week with a .600 on base percentage, four stolen bases and zero strikeouts. This is Russell’s second time this season earning MAC honors as she previously earned MAC East Player of the Week on March 4, 2008. Russell is the first player to earn the award twice in one season since Breanne Nasti and Stacey Evans completed the feat in 2004. Russell ended the season as Buffalo’s top hitter, sporting a .317 batting average (40-for-126). She led the Bulls in RBIs (25), hits (40), doubles (9), stolen bases (16) and was tied for second on the team in walks (10) and homeruns (4). The Bulls produced a strong finish to the 2008 season, winning five of their last 6 and three MAC games, including a split with Eastern Michigan and a sweep of Central Michigan. Overall, Buffalo finished 2008 with a 10-32 record (5-13 MAC).
