Bulls Defeat Miami in Season Finale, 4-2

Breanne Nasti and Stacey Evans set UB single-season records

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat the visiting Miami RedHawks by a 4-2 score in the 2002 season finale this afternoon at the UB Softball Stadium.

Sophomore Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) went 3-for-4 with a double and a triple to end the year with a UB single-season record .451 batting average (51-for-113). That mark also currently stands as the Mid-American Conference single-season record. Freshman pitcher Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) picked up her seventh win of the year on the mound and struck out five batters, giving her a UB single-season record 101 strikeouts on the season.

A two-run home run by Miami's (16-37, 7-16 MAC) Angie Gerber opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, but the Bulls quickly responded with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good. A triple by Nasti drove in freshman Melissa Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan) with the first run, and freshman Ann Marie Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) followed with a two-run home run to center field, her fifth of the season. The Bulls added one more run in the fifth on a double by Magur that drove in Melissa Pace. Magur went 2-for-3 with three RBIs on the afternoon, and Melissa Pace was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Miami pitcher Jackie Poggendorf suffered her second loss of the weekend, giving up 10 hits and striking out five.

The Bulls end the 2002 campaign with a 13-25 overall record and an 8-16 record in the Mid-American Conference. They ended the year by winning four of their last five games and eight of their last 13.
