The University at Buffalo softball team started a six game home stand on Wednesday with a double header against Canisius. In game one, the Bulls waited until the bottom of the seventh to put a score on the board. Sharon Barr slammed the ball over the left field fence for the two-run home run, but the deficit was too much as the Bulls went down, 6-2. Game two went in favor of the Bulls. Down by two runs, Buffalo came back with two runs of their own, stringing together four hits in the top of the third. Kristen Gallipani hit an RBI double and scored when Kristin Waldron singled through the left side. Canisius tied the game at three in the bottom of the sixth inning to force extra innings. Waldron tripled to right center and advanced home on a Canisius throwing error to score the eventual game winner. The triple marked Waldron's fifth of the season and puts her at the top of the single season triple's list.
Bulls Split with Western Michigan in Close Scoring Games The Bulls took an early lead in game one, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first with Alex Bejarano knocking the ball deep to left field for a two-run double. The Broncos came back with back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the second to match the score and took a one run lead in the top of the third. The Bulls posted another run in the bottom of the third, with Gallipani singling down the left field line, stealing second and making it to third on a passed ball. Waldron doubled to left center to drive home the RBI. With Gallipani's two stolen bases on the day, she now leads Buffalo's all-time stolen bases in a single-season with 18. WMU scored two runs in the top of the fourth, but Buffalo was relentless, mounting a comeback in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Waldron sent a single to left field for an RBI and Terese Diaz walked to send home the tying run, forcing extra innings. It took three extra innings to decide the winner, as neither team could score in the eighth or ninth. In conference games a runner is placed on second in the 10th inning in the event of a tie. Waldron was placed on second and sent to third on a sacrifice bunt by Bejarano. Diaz flied out to center field but Waldron was able to tag up and slide home for the winning run. Waldron went two-for- three with two RBIs in the game. In another close match, Western Michigan scored the only run of the game in the top of the third inning. The rest of the game was a defensive dual, as neither team could get any more runs on the board. Gallipani, Barr, Waldron and Dana Carter each had hits for Buffalo, but couldn?t string enough together for a score.
Bulls Drop a Pair to Northern Illinois to Wrap Up Season On Saturday, the Bulls were down by one early in the game, but remained solid on defense, holding the Huskies to just one hit in the first four innings. The Huskies put up two more runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings to go up, 3-0. Buffalo posted a run in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run from Barr, her second of the week. Barr led the Bulls at the plate, going two-for-three on the day. The Bulls were unable to produce another run, making the final score, 3-1. On Sunday, Northern Illinois took a one run lead on a solo home run in the top of the second and extended their lead on a sac-fly run in the top of the third. Buffalo rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two runners on, Carter knocked the ball to the NIU short stop, who made a crucial fielding error to give Buffalo their first score. Ashley Kanavy singled and the tying run went home on another NIU error. Northern Illinois answered the Bulls' rally with a two run homer early in the sixth inning and then earned two more runs to eventually end the game with a 6-2 score. Diaz started on the mound for the Bulls, but was relieved by Barr after two innings of work. Diaz finishes the season with 205 strikeouts, which puts her at the top of UB's all-time strikeouts in a single season list, shattering the old record of 178 and also set a new record for most wins in a season with 14.
Wrap up The Bulls finish their season with a record of 25-27 (7-15 MAC) falling just short of MAC tournament post season play. 25 wins ties the most wins in a single season in UB?s Division I softball history.
