Bulls End Season With Loss to Akron

Junior Breanne Nasti hits home run in 6-3 loss

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team ended the 2003 season with an 18-21 overall record and a 7-13 mark in the Mid-American Conference following a 6-3 loss to the visiting Akron Zips this afternoon at Nan Harvey Field. Junior Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) belted her first home run of the year and junior Marce Ross (Innisfil, Ontario/St. Peter's) had Buffalo's other two RBIs to lead the Bulls' offense.

Nasti hit a home run over the center field fence with two outs in the bottom of the first inning to get the Bulls on the board first. The Zips, however, answered with a two-run homer to left by Kelly Quigley in the top of the second to go ahead by a 2-1 score. Akron put two more runs across the plate in the fourth inning and then added single runs in the fifth and sixth to take a commanding 6-1 lead. The Bulls threatened in the fifth when they loaded the bases, and sophomore Ann Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) hit a line drive to left field that Akron's Kerry Omerza grabbed after it bounced off the tip of her glove to end the inning. Senior Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) and junior Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) started the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles, and they both crossed the plate on a two-out single to center by Ross for Buffalo's final two runs in the game.

Senior Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) suffered the loss for the Bulls, allowing four runs on four hits in four innings of work. Akron's Tina McCauley went the distance on the mound for the Zips, allowing seven hits and striking out four.
