Bulls Post Two ShutoutsBUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team shut out the visiting Miami RedHawks in both ends of a doubleheader this afternoon at the UB Softball Stadium to improve its record to 12-25 overall and 7-16 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bulls outhit the RedHawks by a 15-7 margin in both games and outscored them 8-0 on the afternoon.
Sophomore Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) broke a 0-0 tie in the fifth inning of the opener with her fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot over the center field fence to score junior Missy Switzer (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West/Valparaiso), who was pinch-running for freshman Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem), after Hibner led off the inning with a single to right field. Evans struck out eight batters for her sixth win of the year, while Miami freshman Jackie Poggendorf moved to 14-20 on the year while striking out seven. The Bulls scored three runs on four hits in each of the first two innings of game two to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Sophomore Marce Ross (Innisfil, Ontario/St. Peter's) led off the bottom of the first with a single and came around to score on a double by freshman Melissa Pace (Long Beach, CA/Millikan). Sophomore Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) then reached on an infield hit and crossed the plate on a ground out to short by Hibner, and a double to center by Round drove in freshman Ann Marie Magur (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott/Connecticut) with the third run of the inning. A single by Melissa Pace, a sacrifice fly by Nasti and a double by Magur drove in runs in the second, and the Bulls' defense got out of bases-loaded jams in the second and fifth innings to keep the shutout intact. The RedHawks stranded 11 runners on base in the game, and Robbins recorded her fifth win of the year while striking out four. Miami starter Kristy Wells took the loss despite pitching only one inning. She was relieved by Poggendorf after facing three batters in the second, and Poggendorf then allowed five hits and one run in her five innings of work. The Bulls and the RedHawks will finish their three-game series, and conclude the 2002
season, with a single game on Sunday at Noon at the UB Softball Stadium. |
