Bulls Lose at Miami, 6-2

Nasti Sets UB Career RBI Record

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team (11-39, 3-19 MAC) lost the opening game of a three-game series at Miami this afternoon by a 6-2 score. The RedHawks (17-33, 7-15 MAC) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and they outhit the Bulls by a 12-3 margin to earn the victory.

Freshman Breanne Nasti
The RedHawks strung together four hits and scored three runs with two outs in their first at-bat to take control of the game early on. The Bulls got on the board in the third inning when sophomore Laura Gilcrist (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) came around to score on a sacrifice fly to left field by freshman Breanne Nasti (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin). The RBI was Nasti's 41st of the year, giving her sole possession of the career RBI record at UB.

Miami, however, increased its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on a home run by Nicki Pelfrey. The RedHawks had another four-hit inning in the fifth and put one more run across the plate before freshman Heather Robbins (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) struck out pinch-hitter Anna Weinstein to end the inning with bases loaded. Freshman Allison Round (Markham, Ontario/Markham District) hit her fourth home run of the year in the Buffalo sixth, but that was the only other run the Bulls would get in the game. Round has now hit safely in her last five games, and she has a home run in each of her last two games.

Robbins and freshman Jessica Labella (Kings Park, NY/Kings Park) both singled to account for Buffalo's only other hits on the afternoon. Robbins took the loss on the mound for the Bulls while striking out four batters.

Buffalo closes out the 2001 season with a doubleheader against the RedHawks on Saturday, May 5 beginning at 1 pm.
