Bulls Wrap Up Season Against Northern Illinois Seniors Dana Carter, Ashley Kanavy and Erin Zilka make final appearance in Blue and White BUFFALO, NY- The University at Buffalo softball team played their last game of the 2009 season this afternoon at Nan Harvey Field. The Bulls lost to the Northern Illinois Huskies, 6-2 to wrap up a six game home stand. The game marked the final appearance of UB's three seniors, Dana Carter, Ashley Kanavy and Erin Zilka.
Northern Illinois took a one run lead on a solo home run in the top of the second and extended their lead on a sac-fly run in the top of the third. Buffalo rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the fifth inning, starting with a single up the middle from Alex Bejarano. Terese Diaz was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Carter knocked the ball to the NIU short stop, who made a crucial fielding error to give Buffalo their first score. Kanavy singled to the short stop, who over threw to first base, allowing Kanavy to advance to second, sending Diaz home with the tying run. Kristen Gallipani also added a hit for the Bulls. Northern Illinois answered the Bulls' rally with a two run homer early in the sixth inning and then earned two more runs to re-take the lead, eventually ending the game with a 6-2 score, as neither team would score again.
Diaz started on the mound for the Bulls, but was relieved by Sharon Barr after two innings. The pitchers combined for four strikeouts on the day. The Bulls finish their season with a record of 25-27 (7-15 MAC) falling just short of MAC tournament post season play. 25 wins ties the most wins in a single season in UB's Division I softball history.
