Bulls Fall to Northern Illinois Sharon Barr inks her third home run of the season BUFFALO, NY- The University at Buffalo softball team took on Northern Illinois this afternoon, falling to the Huskies, 3-1. Sharon Barr earned the Bulls’ only run in the bottom of the sixth inning, with a solo home run over the left field fence. The home run marked Barr’s third of the season and ninth of her career. With the loss, the Bulls are now 25-26 (7-14 MAC).
Northern Illinois got on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the second. The Bulls were solid on defense, holding the Huskies to just one hit in the first four innings. The Huskies put up two more runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings to go up, 3-0. Buffalo put up a run in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run from Barr. Barr led the Bulls at the plate, going two-for-three on the day. Terese Diaz and Katie Ivancich each added hits for Buffalo, but the Bulls were unable to produce another run, making the final score, 3-1. Diaz started on the mound for Buffalo, and was relieved by Barr in the fifth inning. Barr pitched 0.2 innings and added a strike to the count. Diaz came back in to finish the game in the top of the sixth, striking out a key batter with two runners on and only one out. Kristen Gallipani made the third out with a diving catch at center field to prevent the Northern Illinois score. Diaz finished the day with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.
The Bulls play their last home game of the 2009 season tomorrow against Northern Illinois at 1 pm at Nan Harvey Field. Buffalo’s three seniors, Dana Carter, Ashley Kanavy, and Erin Zilka will all be honored before the first pitch.
