Softball Splits with Eastern MichiganBUFFALO, NY- The University at Buffalo softball team hosted the Eastern Michigan Eagles in a Mid-American Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Nan Harvey Field. The Bulls split their MAC series with the Eagles, taking the second game 6-2 while suffering a 4-3 setback in the day’s opener.
Kristen Gallipani (Brewster, NY/Brewster) had an excellent day at the plate, as the right fielder finished the series 3-for-5 (.600) with a stolen base. Additionally, Alex Bejarano (Chandler, AZ/Chandler) ended the day 3-for-6 (.500) with a double and one RBI while Sharon Barr (Coarsegold, CA/Yosemite Union) went 2-for-6 (.333) from the plate with one double and a trio of RBIs. Also, in the Bulls’ game two victory, Barr collected her third win of the season on the mound, throwing the complete game. In game one, after three scoreless innings of play, Eastern Michigan put three runs on the board in the top of the fourth and one more in the top of the fifth to take a 4-0 lead into the bottom half of the fifth.
Buffalo mounted a comeback, however, plating three of its own runs in the bottom of the sixth. Gallipani led-off the inning with a single and eventually reached third as Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) reached on a fielder’s choice. The next batter, Lindsey Hampton (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton), reached on a fielder’s choice, with Gallipani out at home on the play and Hansen able to move to third. Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego) then found her way to first on a fielder’s choice, with Hansen scoring the Bulls’ first run. Russell then stole both second and third and later scored on a Barr double to left. Bejarano then grabbed UB’s third RBI of the inning, scoring Barr on a laser down the left field line to set the score at 4-3. Neither team was able to score in the seventh, as Eastern Michigan grabbed the 4-3 win in game one.
In game two, the Bulls took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a lead-off triple down the right field line from Hansen. After one Buffalo out, Russell drew a walk and was able to draw a throw while stealing second which enabled Hansen to plate the Bulls’ first run. UB then built on its lead in the bottom of the third. Gallipani hit a single to commence the inning and followed by stealing second, ultimately plating a run thanks to an Eastern Michigan fielding error to give Buffalo a 2-0 advantage. After a scoreless fourth, the Bulls exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one down, Gallipani drew a walk and advanced to second on a Hansen single. Hampton then loaded the bases with a bunt-single. Russell scored Gallipani on a sacrifice bunt with Hansen and Hampton crossing the plate on a Barr two-RBI single to right center. Bejarano followed with a single of her own and Lacy Schneider (Idyllwild, CA/Hemet) picked up the final RBI of the inning with a single to short stop to give the Bulls a 6-0 lead after five. EMU scored two runs in the top of the sixth, but after holding the Eagles in the seventh, the Bulls emerged with the 6-2 win. Buffalo returns to action on Saturday, as UB is set to host Central Michigan in a single MAC game. First pitch is slated for 2:00 pm on Nan Harvey Field.
