Bulls Shutout Miami On Barstad's Two Hitter
Barstad was nearly unhittable in the contest, not allowing a single Miami baserunner until the fifth inning, when Leslie Macedo hit a one-out double. At that point the Bulls had already built the six-run lead. In the top of the first the Bulls honored their two seniors by putting both of them on the field for the first pitch. Lauren Picciano (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott), who is out with an arm injury, went to shortstop before being replaced by Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) after the first pitch was thrown. Senior Lisa Wheat (Olympia, WA/Tumwater) began the game in right field, she was also removed after the first pitch, but did stay on as the designated player.
For the second straight day the Bulls got on the board early, scoring one in the bottom of the first. Hansen hit a one-out double down the left field line and scored on a single by Barstad, helping her own cause. Barstad would remain perfect and in the bottom of the fourth, UB would break the game open. Laura Kor (Beaverton, OR/Westview) led off the inning with a single down the left field line, which was followed by a walk from Wheat. Sophomore Lacy Schneider (Idylwild, NY/Hemet) then hit a single, scoring Kor and moving Wheat to third. After a pop out to first, junior Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) delivered for the second straight day, hitting a single to left field, plating Wheat. Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy), who hit the game-winning home run just one day ago, hit an infield single to the short stop and loaded the bases. Hansen then hit a shot up the left side, but was robbed on a diving stop by Alexis Javier and was thrown out at first, she did drive in a run on the play. With two runners in scoring position, Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) hit a two-run single into center field.
After that Barstad cruised through the order, allowing just the fifth inning double and a single in the sixth inning. Zilka hit a double in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap off a 3-for-4 day. Wheat singled in the fifth inning, ending her UB career with a base hit. Barstad picked up the win for the Bulls, her 13th of the year, setting the school record for wins in a season. She went the distance, allowing just the two hits and striking out three, while walking none. For the second straight day, Kelly Cabana picks up the loss for the Miami, going 3.1 innings and was charged with five runs on seven hits. Melissa Kail pitched the final 2.2 innings, while giving up one run. Kor finished the game 2-for-3 and ends the season riding a four-game hitting streak, the longest current streak on the team. The 2006 Bulls finish the season breaking a few team records. The squad now ranks first in at bats (1,444), hits (332), doubles (54), home runs (21), walks (123), putouts (1,083), assists (502) and innings pitched (361.0). Barstad set the team record for wins (13) and innings pitched (218.2), while Hansen set the school record for at bats in a season (171). The Bulls return 13 of their 15 players next season, including three juniors., who will then be seniors. |
