Bulls Get Swept by Bowling Green

Buffalo evens its MAC record at 8-8 with 2-1 loss to Falcons

BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped its third consecutive game to the Bowling Green Falcons on Sunday, this time by a score of 2-1. The Bulls are now 17-26 overall and 8-8 in the Mid-American Conference.

The Bulls got off to a quick start, as they scored their only run in the first inning. Sophomore Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) led off the game with a double to left center. Russell then collected her 12th stolen base of the season, stealing third; she has yet to be caught. With two outs in the inning senior catcher Julie Hibner (Salem, OR/South Salem) hit a single to right field, which scored the run.

Buffalo received a solid pitching performance from sophomore Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby), who only allowed three hits, all in the fourth inning, and two runs, but picked up the loss.

After facing the minimum through three, Barstad gave up a single to begin the fourth. After getting the next batter to pop up, she allowed a single up the middle to put runners on first and second. Gina Rango tied the game up for Bowling Green with a double to right field, as well as move the eventual game-winning run to third base. Barstad was able to get Jeanine Baca to fly out for the second out, but it was far enough to score the run from third.

The Bulls would get a chance to tie it back up in the fifth inning when they had runners on second and third with two outs, but a strikeout would end the threat.

The Bulls will look to rebound this Tuesday as they travel to Niagara for a doubleheader with the Purple Eagles. First pitch is at 3:00 pm.
