Bulls Split With Cornell UB snapped an 11-game losing string by winning the second game of their doubleheader at Cornell 5-2 Sunday afternoon in Ithaca. The Bulls scored three runs in the first on a bases loaded double by Kelly Malone (Waterford, MI/Waterford Kettering). UB picked up a pair of insurance runs in the final inning including a run scoring single by Kim Sudakow (Utica, NY/Proctor). The Bulls managed to hold off a seventh inning Cornell rally as Andrea Sage (Depew, NY/Depew) earned the victory, her second of the year. UB dropped the opener 5-1with Sage accounting for the only RBI plating Lisa Cox (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North).
UB Swept By Albany The Bulls dropped a Saturday doubleheader to Albany, 5-4 and 12-2 on Saturday afternoon at UB Softball Stadium. In the opener, Albany's Stacy Kowal knocked in the winning run with a bases loaded sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning scoring Kara Faraone. UB scored three runs in the top of the first highlighted by RBI singles by Jennifer Moore (Williamsville, NY/Delhi District) and Stacee Madden (Corning, NY/East). Albany picked up a run in the second and took the lead in the third as Valerie Terry hit a two-run homer and Stephanie Strauss hit a solo blast. Albany also had a home run taken away as Kowal was touched by a teammate before reaching home plate and was subsequently ruled out. The Bulls tied the contest in the fifth as Danielle Haynes (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) came around to score as Terry allowed the ball to get through her legs. In the nightcap, the Great Danes erupted for three runs in the first on Kowal's bases loaded double. Albany also cashed in with two in the second, three in the fourth and four in the fifth. The Bulls scored single runs in the second and third innings. A double to right by Jessica Kensy (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) scored Kim Lawrence (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) while Moore accounted for the other RBI with a double scoring Cox in the third.
Consecutive No-Hitters Thrown On Bulls The week began with the Bulls dropping doubleheaders at Cleveland State and St. Bonaventure with Syracuse sweep sandwiched between. A rarity occured as the Bulls were no-hit by Cleveland State's Cassie Pittman, 5-0, in the second game of the twinbill on Monday with the Vikings and Syracuse's Tara DiMaggio threw a perfect game on the Bulls in the opener of Tuesday's doubleheader. DiMaggio had ten strikeouts in the contest.
At the Plate Through 40 games, the Bulls are hitting .241. Danielle Haynes leads the Bulls with a .381 average and became UB's single-season hits leader with 37 passing Karen Macris' 1985 total of 35. Haynes also leads the team with 18 runs scored and eight steals. Kelly Malone leads UB with four home runs and 15 RBIs while raising her average to .305. Stacee Madden has 13 RBIs and a single-season school record six doubles while hitting .295.
On the Mound The Bulls' pitching staff holds a team earned run average of 6.35 this season. UB's pitching was dealt a blow when Jessica York (South Dayton, NY/Pine Valley) was forced to miss the remainder of the season due to a cracked rib. York still leads the squad at 4.83 and has a 2-5 record. Left-hander Andrea Sage leads the club with 100.2 innings pitched, 35 strikeouts and 13 complete games, including both ends of UB's split with Cornell on Sunday. Jessica Kensy is 2-13 with 25 strikeouts splitting her time between the mound and second base.
Up Next The Bulls are set to conclude their season this
week with a pair of doubleheaders. UB travels to Niagara to
take on the Purple Eagles on Tuesday at 1:00 pm and
then returns home for the season finale, a double dip
against Youngstown State, Saturday at 1:00 pm. |
