Bulls Host League-Leading Golden FlashesBUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team hosted a hot Kent State squad in a Mid-American Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, falling to the first place Golden Flashes 10-0 and 5-1.
After being handcuffed by Kent State freshman and MAC standout pitcher Kylie Reynolds who no-hit the Bulls in game one, Buffalo resurged in game two, aided fittingly on Senior Day by the explosive bat of UB’s lone senior Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill). After a scoreless first inning of play in game two, the Golden Flashes got on the board in the top of the second when, with one out and runners on second and third, Kim Hamilton hit a hard double to the outfield. Hamilton would ultimately score on the play, inking three RBIs as she plowed into Buffalo catcher Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia) who was unable to corrale the throw from centerfielder Jaime Sheffler (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango Central).
Kent State put single runs on the board in the top of the fifth and in the top of the seventh, with the Bulls finally scoring in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Brittney Hussong (Rochester, NY/Nazarath Academy/Monroe CC) stepped to the plate and roped a single to leftfield. Senior Brandie Clark (Medicine Hat, Alberta/Medicine Hat), making her first appearance of the season, was then inserted to pinch run for Hussong. Sheffler then struck a single up the middle to advance Clark to second. Next, freshman Samantha Gaetano (Rochester, NY/Nazareth Academy) hit a hard single that scored Clark and sent Sheffler to second. Unfortunately, the one run was all the Bulls were able to put on the board, with the final score swaying in Kent State’s favor.
Greene, playing in her final home game, finished the game 2-for-3 with a stolen base while Gaetano also gathered a duo of hits and the UB RBI. Sophomore Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) ended the game with a hit, as did Hussong and Sheffler. The Bulls return to the diamond on Tuesday, May 1 as Buffalo is set to take on Niagara in a non-league doubleheader. Game time is set for 3:00 pm in Niagara University, NY. |
