Kent State Too Much For Bulls
The Golden Flashes scored runs in each of the five innings played, including four in the bottom of the fifth for the run-rule to tale effect. Neither Buffalo starter Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby) or reliever Jennifer Biernacki (Medina, NY/Medina) were able to figure out the Kent State bats, allowing nine hits together and 11 runs, 10 of them earned. The two combined for eight walks and just one strikeout on the afternoon. Barstad picked up the loss in the contest, dropping her to 10-21 on the season. On the opposing side, Robinson scattered just four hits on the afternoon, allowing just one run and walking two, while increasing her MAC record for strikeouts in a season, by fanning 11 batters.
UB scored its one run in the top of the fourth inning after it was down by six. Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) began the inning with a double to left center and she advanced to third on a single by Erin Zilka (Benicia, CA/Benicia). Hansen would then score as freshman Ashley Kanavy (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) hit into a fielder's choice. The RBI was the first of Kanavy's career. Hansen and Zilka combined for all four of UB's hits, each of them going 2-for-3 on the afternoon. Hansen was also just one of two UB players who were not strike out victims of Robinson. The Bulls will look to split the series as the two teams meet again tomorrow at Kent State Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm. |
