Bulls Split With St. BonaventureOLEAN, NY - The University at Buffalo softball team ended a five-game skid with a doubleheader split against St. Bonaventure, winning 3-1 in the first game and falling in the second contest 5-4 in the seventh inning, Thursday afternoon at McGraw-Jennings Field. The Bulls got the on the board immediately in the first inning of the first game. Marcy Hansen (Claremont, CA/Claremont) was hit by a pitch with one out and then moved to second on a ground out. Hansen advanced to third on a passed ball and was driven in by Sophie Barstad (Canby, OR/Canby), who singled to left field.
UB added two more runs in the fifth inning as Hansen reached on an error. She advanced to third on a double by freshman Dana Carter (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South). Laura Kor (Beaverton, OR/Westview) drove both runs in with a single to left field. St. Bonaventure picked up a run in the bottom half of the sixth, but that is as close as it would come and the Bulls earned the victory. Barstad pitched the complete game, picking up her 10th win of the season. She scattered four hits and struck out four, while walking none.
Kor finished the first game going 2-for-3 and Hansen accounted for two of the three runs. The Bonnies outhit Buffalo 4-3, but left three runners on base. In the second game, the Bulls got off to another quick start as freshman Jennifer Biernacki (Medina, NY/Medina) struck out the side in the first inning. The Bulls used that momentum to score in the second as Kor belted her second home run of the season, sending a shot to left field. The Bulls were able to load the bases, but failed to add to the lead. St. Bonaventure took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second, but Buffalo fought back to tie the game as Barstad hit a double, which scored Carter. The Bonnies regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning, but the Bulls would come back yet again.
Kerry Cafazzo (Everett, MA/Everett) led the inning off with a single and she moved to second on a bunt single by Lauren Picciano (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott). Both runners moved up on the sacrifice bunt by Mary Russell (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy). Both runners were driven home on a double by Hansen. St. Bonaventure tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth inning, which would be the last inning for Biernacki, who went five innings, allowing six hits and four runs, while striking out four. She picked up the no decision. The game remained tied into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Bonnies led the inning off with a double and a stolen base, putting a runner at third with no outs. She was driven home on a single by Lauren Krieger to left field, giving the Bonnies the win. Margo Schramm (Phoenix, AZ/Catalina Foothills/Iowa Lakes CC) pitched the last two innings for Buffalo and was credited with the loss. Schramm allowed four hits, while facing six batters. Repeating her performance from the first game, Kor went 2-for-3 in the night cap as well. Cafazzo also went 2-for-3 in the contest and Colleen Greene (Cheektowaga, NY/Cleveland Hill) finished 2-for-4. As a team, the 12 hits are tied for a season-high, which Buffalo has accomplished twice already. The Bulls wrap up the lengthy road trip with a two-game set at Kent State this weekend. The first game is Saturday, April 29 at 2:00 pm and the series wraps up on Sunday with a 1:00 pm start. |
